Mercedes-Benz has officially discontinued the GLB SUV in the Indian market, with all units allocated for the country now sold out. Launched in December 2022 alongside the EQB electric SUV, the GLB was positioned as an entry-level luxury SUV and one of the few seven-seaters in its segment. However, the model was always intended to be available in limited numbers, with Mercedes-Benz importing the GLB as a completely built unit (CBU).
The discontinuation comes despite the GLB’s unique positioning in the Indian luxury car market. Priced between ₹63.80 lakh and ₹69.80 lakh (ex-showroom), the SUV was one of the most affordable seven-seat luxury options available at the time of its launch. Mercedes-Benz offered the GLB in three variants: the GLB 200, GLB 220d, and GLB 220d 4MATIC.
The GLB 200 featured a 1.3-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 161 bhp and 250 Nm of torque. The diesel-powered GLB 220d and 220d 4MATIC variants were equipped with a more potent 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine delivering 188 bhp and 400 Nm of torque. All variants were mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, with the 4MATIC variant offering all-wheel drive capabilities.
Globally, the GLB received a mid-life update in 2023, which brought several cosmetic and feature enhancements. These included redesigned bumpers, new alloy wheels, revised lighting elements, and a new grille with a single horizontal slat. Inside, the facelift introduced updated upholstery options, a new steering wheel design, and dual 10.25-inch digital displays as standard. A key mechanical update was the addition of 48-volt mild-hybrid technology across both petrol and diesel variants, enhancing efficiency and performance. However, this updated version has not been introduced in the Indian market.
While the GLB did not achieve high sales volumes, it did find a niche among buyers looking for a practical, compact luxury SUV with three rows of seating. Its boxy design and spacious interior offered a rare blend of form and function in the premium SUV segment. The EQB, Mercedes-Benz’s electric counterpart to the GLB, continues to remain on sale in India, aligning with the brand's broader push towards electrification.
