The electric G-Class is one of the 6 cars the company plans to launch in the second half of 2024.
Mercedes-Benz India surprised everyone by announcing the beginning of pre-bookings for the G-Class electric SUV. The company also said that the electric SUV will launch in the second half of this year and frankly we cannot wait for it to land on our shores. The electric G-Class is one of the 6 cars the company plans to launch in the second half of 2024.
Mercedes-Benz India showcased the EQG concept at the Bharat Mobility show earlier this year, teasing the car. But now, with official confirmation, the G-Class Electric is heading our way. Officially called the G 580 with EQ Technology, the electric SUV has the muscles to show off.
The G-Class Electric will come with a 116 kWh battery pack and with a punch of 579 bhp. Torque figures stand at 1164 Nm and of course, it will come with the All-Wheel Drive system.
0-100 kmph is done in just 4.7 seconds and that is possible even when it weighs close to 3 tonnes. There are three drive modes: Comfort, Sport, and Individual and of course it has two off-road modes: Trail and Rock.
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class electric uses torque vectoring to generate virtual differential locks. This provides the exact required torque to each wheel, a calculation that’s done in a matter of seconds. The G 580 gets 4 motors, one on each wheel and what impresses nis the fact that each motor setup also has its own gearbox with a switchable low-range setting and that enhances its off-road capability.
It has a ground clearance of at least 250 mm between two axles and a water-wading capacity of 850 mm. Its approach angle stands at 32 degrees, breakover angle at 20.3 degrees, and departure angle at 30.7 degrees.
The ‘G-Turn’ is perhaps the coolest trick that the G 580 has. The electric SUV can make quick directional changes and the simplest way to understand this, is by comparing it to a military tank. The G-Class Electric is able to spin 360-degrees on the spot and it does so by turning the wheels on the left and right sides of the car in opposite directions.
The all-electric G-Class will support fast charging of up to 200 kW. 10 to 80 percent will be done in around 32 minutes. Its massive battery can also be top-up via an 11 kW AC charger while at home, but that would take considerably longer.
The G 580 looks every bit a Gelandenwagen and it continues the legacy of being a true-blue off-roader. It looks very similar to the ICE version, and so the circular LED DRLs give it its identity. This one also comes with adaptive LED projector headlights, featuring 84 individual LEDs. Mercedes-Benz has fitted it with 18-inch 5-spoke black alloy wheels that range up to 20-inch units on the AMG-specific model.
The G 580 will land on Indian shores soon and the fact that pre-bookings have begun, we’ll soon know more about the launch. The SUV will not come cheap as we expect it to be priced over Rs. 2.5 crore.
