Winning the notorious Isle of Man TT race is a triumphant feeling that few are privileged to experience. However, the Dunlop family has been trying to prove the opposite, with almost every generation attempting to win the most coveted and dangerous race in the world. The latest and current Dunlop, Michael Dunlop, who is also the last of the Dunlops to be racing in the Isle of Man TT 2024, has just secured his 26th win, tying his great-uncle Joey Dunlop, who also holds the same number of Isle of Man TT victories.
At the time of writing this article, Michael Dunlop still had a few more races left. The Northern Irish professional motorcycle racer participates in the Superbike TT, Supersport TT, Supertwin TT, and the Senior TT categories. His 26th win came in the Supersport TT race category.
Michael Dunlop hails from a family of die-hard racers. Even his father, Robert Dunlop, and younger brother, William Dunlop, have raced in the TT. Sadly, we lost both of them in 2008 and 2018, respectively. Michael Dunlop is the last of the Dunlop dynasty, carrying forward his family's name by tying his great-uncle Joey Dunlop, who, until now, held the most TT wins at 26.
Dunlop has so far shown no signs of slowing down even after the wrist injury that he endured in late April at the Irish national race. At the Isle of Man TT 2024, he has already posted his record 12th Supersport race victory and a fifth succession in the class. He was riding the Yamaha R6 run by his own MD Racing Team.
Ahead of Sunday’s six-lap Superbike race, Dunlop is expected to surpass his uncle and register his 27th win. Furthermore, he will also have to take on Superstock events, Supertwins TT, and the Senior TT.
