On the 30th anniversary of Ayrton Senna's tragic fatal crash at Imola, streaming giant Netflix has released the first trailer for its highly anticipated six-part miniseries, simply titled "Senna". The series, set to premiere later this year, will delve into the remarkable life and career of the legendary Brazilian Formula 1 driver, widely regarded as one of the greatest of all time and an inspiration to modern-day champions like Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso.
The trailer offers a glimpse into Senna's iconic victory at the 1991 Brazilian Grand Prix, where he managed to finish first despite his McLaren being stuck in sixth gear for more than half the race, leaving him in excruciating pain. The series also promises to explore Senna's legendary rivalry with Alain Prost, his teammate for two seasons.
In addition to well-known moments, the miniseries will shed light on lesser-known aspects of Senna's life, such as his move to the UK in 1981 to compete in F1600 racing and his junior category races in 1982 and 1983 before his F1 debut with Toleman in 1984. The series will also include fictional elements that depict Senna's personal life.
Netflix has collaborated with Brazilian production company Gullane to create the series, with Brazilian actor Gabriel Leone portraying Senna. Brazilian filmmakers Vicente Amorim and Julia Rezende are directing the project. The cast also includes Matt Mella as Prost, Johannes Heinrichs as Niki Lauda, Patrick Kennedy as former McLaren team boss Ron Dennis, Leon Ockenden as James Hunt, Steven Mackintosh as Williams boss Sir Frank Williams, and Alice Wegmann as Senna's first wife, Lillian Vasconcelos.
Senna, who won the Formula 1 World Drivers' Championship in 1988, 1990, and 1991 with McLaren, is often hailed as the greatest driver in wet conditions. He claimed 41 race victories before his untimely death at the age of 34 during the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix at Imola, where he crashed at over 180 mph at the Tamberello corner while driving for Williams.
The Williams car Senna was driving at the time of his fatal crash was designed by Adrian Newey, the soon-to-be-former Red Bull chief technical officer who announced his departure from the team today after a 19-year stint. Newey has described the day of Senna's death as the saddest of his career and was briefly embroiled in a legal case when Italian authorities held him accountable for the crash. He was eventually exonerated a couple of years ago.
As fans commemorate the 30th anniversary of Ayrton Senna's passing, the upcoming Netflix miniseries promises to be a fitting tribute to the life and legacy of one of Formula 1's most iconic and beloved figures.
