The Triumph Motorcycle and Bajaj Auto partnered Triumph Speed 400 has finally arrived in India at an introductory price of Rs. 2.23 lakh (ex-showroom) for the first 10,000 buyers, after which the price will increase by Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 2.33 lakh (ex-showroom). The extremely aggressive pricing of the Triumph Speed 400 comes hot on the heels of the launch of Harley’s most affordable, Harley-Davidson X440 which is priced at Rs. 2.29 lakh for the base trim and goes up to Rs. 2.69 lakh for the top-spec version.
Conceived and designed in Hinckley, UK, the new Triumph Speed 400 will be manufactured by Bajaj in its new Chakan plant, in Pune. While bookings are now open for the new Triumph at Rs. 2,000, deliveries will only commence by the end of July, while the Triumph Scrambler 400 X will be launched in October 2023.
With the introduction of the new Speed 400 and under the partnership, Triumph will expand its dealer network to 100 within this fiscal year. Apart from a 16,000 km service interval and a two-year unlimited mileage warranty, Triumph will also offer an extended warranty for another three years.
At the heart of the Triumph Speed 400 is an all-new fuel-injected and liquid-cooled 398 cc single-cylinder engine, producing 38 bhp @ 8000 rpm and 37.5 Nm @ 6500 rpm, paired with a 6-speed gearbox. The Triumph Speed 400 comes with a seat height of 790 mm and weighs 170 kg. Both models benefit from their own model-specific chassis set-up, with a new frame, bolt-on rear subframe, and cast-aluminum swingarm paired with suspension set-ups tailored to each use case.
The Triumph Speed 400 features large 43 mm big-piston upside-down front forks, a mono-shock rear suspension unit with an external reservoir, lightweight 17-inch wheels, and roadster-specific geometry and wheelbase. Then there are also powerful four-piston radial front brakes with a 300 mm front disc and braided lines to give a responsive brake feel.
The Triumph Speed 400 gets Ride-By-Wire throttle, Traction control, ABS, new dual format instruments with integrated LCD screens, a USB-C charging socket, and a Torque-Assist clutch. Triumph also says that the motorcycle is built from tubular steel on a hybrid spine/perimeter frame with a bolt-on rear subframe.
The Triumph Speed 400 is 2056 mm long, 795 mm wide, and 1075 mm tall. The Triumph Speed 400 wears Metzeler Sportec M9RR tyres, shod with 110/70 R17 at the front and 150/60 R17 at the rear.
