New Yamaha Electric Scooter Design Patent Leaked in Japan

A series of new design registration filings has revealed a production-ready electric scooter from Yamaha, offering an early look at a brand-new zero-emission urban commuter.

While the Japanese manufacturer has not officially announced product specifications or launch timelines, the patent documentation highlights a complete, functional design that sits outside Yamaha’s current global EV portfolio. Visually, the scooter borrows styling cues and proportions from the petrol-powered Ray ZR 125, but its internal platform is entirely re-engineered for electric powertrains.

The defining technical highlight of the newly patented model is its drivetrain configuration. Unlike hub-motor setups or swingarm mounted layouts seen on models such as the Aerox-E, which features a 12.7 bhp (9.5 kW) electric motor, this new scooter utilises a centrally mounted electric motor. Power is transmitted to the rear wheel via a final belt drive. This motorcycle-style arrangement is engineered to improve chassis balance, centralise mass, and optimise suspension dynamics for urban road conditions.

Styling details show a sharp, contemporary front apron housing four rectangular LED headlight elements flanked by a central V-shaped daytime running lamp. The inner apron includes practical storage cubbies, while the absence of an ignition keyhole points to standard keyless start technology. A compact digital display, likely a TFT unit, sits above the handlebar cowl to handle instrument readouts and potential smartphone connectivity.

Industry analysts expect the scooter to sit in the 125 cc-equivalent performance tier, positioning it as a practical mass-market option rather than a niche premium offering. While global rollout details remain unconfirmed, the model could serve as a core volume driver if introduced to expanding electric two-wheeler markets like India.
