Honda has begun road-testing its next-generation Amaze, with the heavily camouflaged test mule spotted on the outskirts of Delhi. The new compact sedan is slated to debut next month, in September, with deliveries likely to start early next year. This model will compete in the subcompact sedan segment, going up against established rivals like the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Hyundai Aura, and even Tata Tigor.
Despite the extensive camouflage, some details about the upcoming Amaze have emerged. The overall silhouette of the test vehicle suggests that Honda may retain the slab-sided design of the outgoing model, with possible modern enhancements to its appearance. The design updates could bring a fresh look while maintaining the recognizable profile of the current Amaze.
Notable features visible on the test mule include smokey-finished tail lamps, a reverse camera, a shark fin antenna, and three fixed headrests for rear passengers, a feature similar to the larger Honda City. The presence of these elements indicates that the test mule was likely undergoing powertrain and emissions testing.
The new Amaze will reportedly be built on the Honda City’s platform, although it will have a shorter wheelbase to keep its length under four meters. This platform upgrade could bring improved dynamics and a more refined driving experience. The current Amaze has a 2470mm wheelbase, significantly shorter than the City’s 2600mm, and it remains to be seen how this will translate to interior space and ride quality.
Under the hood, the next-gen Amaze is expected to continue with the tried-and-tested 1.2-litre petrol engine, available with a 5-speed manual or a CVT automatic transmission. There are also rumours of CNG-powered variants, which could be introduced later to cater to the growing demand for alternative fuel options.
However, the Amaze will face stiff competition in its segment, especially with the all-new Maruti Suzuki Dzire set to launch later this year. Currently, the Honda Amaze is priced between ₹7.20 lakh and ₹9.96 lakh (ex-showroom, India) and accounts for a significant portion of Honda’s sales in India.
