In a significant move towards advancing next-generation automotive technologies, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. and Honda Motor Co., Ltd. today announced a joint research agreement focusing on fundamental technologies for software-defined vehicles (SDVs). This collaboration builds on a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed on March 15, which set the stage for discussions on a strategic partnership in the realms of intelligence and electrification.

The two automakers aim to accelerate efforts towards creating a carbon-neutral and traffic-accident-free society by promoting research and development (R&D) and investments in various technologies. The primary focus will be on electric vehicles (EVs) and SDVs, leveraging their combined technological expertise and human resources to foster innovation in autonomous driving, connectivity, and artificial intelligence (AI).

1. Next-Generation SDV Platform

Nissan and Honda have agreed to conduct joint research on the fundamental technologies of the next-generation SDV platform, to complete basic research within a year. Depending on the outcomes, the companies may proceed to mass production development, aiming to position themselves at the forefront of intelligent vehicle technologies.

2. Batteries

Recognising the critical role of batteries in EVs, Nissan and Honda will explore cooperative opportunities from both short-term and long-term perspectives. This includes sharing specifications and potentially mutually supplying batteries, thereby enhancing cost efficiency and diversifying investments. They have also agreed to standardise their battery cell modules to ensure vehicle compatibility. Notably, Honda's joint venture with LG Energy Solution, L-H Battery Company, Inc., will supply lithium-ion batteries to Nissan in North America starting in 2028.

3. e-Axles

The companies have reached a basic agreement to standardise the specifications of their e-Axles over the medium to long term. Initially, this will involve sharing motors and inverters, key components of the e-Axle, to streamline development processes and enhance the performance of their next-generation EVs.

4. Mutual Vehicle Complementation

Nissan and Honda will consider complementing each other's vehicle models globally, addressing both internal combustion engine (ICE) and EV models. They have agreed on specific models and regions for mutual support and established a joint product review system to facilitate this collaboration.

5. Energy Services and Resource Circulation in Japan

In Japan, the two companies will explore cooperative ventures in energy services and resource circulation. This includes developing charging infrastructure, energy equipment, battery-based energy services, and other related services.

The newly signed MOU aims to deepen the strategic partnership by defining more specific areas of cooperation and expediting the realisation of shared goals. Both companies are committed to exploring further synergies and implementing specific measures swiftly to stay competitive in the rapidly evolving automotive industry.
