OnePlus has officially announced it will not release a successor to its OnePlus Open foldable phone in 2025, marking a shift in the company's product roadmap. The announcement was made on a OnePlus Community post by Product Manager Vale G, addressing speculation about a potential OnePlus Open 2 device.
The decision marks a recalibration of OnePlus's foldable device strategy. While the company had launched its inaugural OnePlus Open in 2023, followed by the enhanced OnePlus Open Apex Edition in 2024, it has now opted to pause its foldable phone development for the current generation.
The company had earlier indicated that Oppo Find N5, scheduled for release on February 20 in China and global markets, will spearhead their combined foldable phone initiatives this year. The Find N5 is likely to set a new benchmark as the market's thinnest foldable device.
The absence of a new OnePlus foldable creates a notable market dynamic, particularly in the US, where Samsung's purported Galaxy Z Fold 7 may face reduced competition. However, international markets will maintain competitive diversity through offerings from Oppo, Honor, and Huawei.
OnePlus has emphasised its ongoing commitment to existing customers, confirming continued support for the OnePlus Open through software updates, security patches, and hardware services.
Looking forward, OnePlus has also affirmed its long-term commitment to foldable technology, indicating plans to incorporate advanced materials and technologies, such as those featured in the upcoming Oppo Find N5, into future OnePlus products. However, no specific timeline has been provided for the company's next foldable device release.
