Passenger Vehicle Market Grows to 4.15 Million Units; Mercedes-Benz, BMW, JLR Post Strong Numbers

Maruti Suzuki India maintained its dominance, closing FY’25 with 16,71,559 units sold.

India’s passenger vehicle (PV) market grew steadily in FY2025, registering total retail sales of 41.53 lakh units, marking a 4.88 per cent year-on-year increase over FY2024’s 39.60 lakh units, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd maintained its dominance, closing FY’25 with 16,71,559 units sold. However, its market share dipped marginally to 40.25 per cent, compared to 40.60 per cent in FY’24.

Hyundai Motor India Ltd reported marginally lower volumes at 5,59,149 units, down from 5,62,865 units the previous year. Its market share slid to 13.46 per cent from 14.21 per cent, indicating a competitive squeeze despite strong demand for its SUVs like the Creta and Venue.

Tata Motors Ltd also saw a dip, selling 5,35,960 units versus 5,39,567 in FY’24. The company’s market share declined to 12.90 per cent from 13.62 per cent, amid a plateauing of demand in its electric and ICE portfolios. However, Tata remains firmly entrenched as India’s third-largest PV player.

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd emerged as one of the standout performers of FY’25, clocking 5,12,626 units—a substantial increase over 4,27,390 units in FY’24. The brand’s market share rose to 12.34 per cent, up from 10.79 per cent, driven by robust demand for its SUV lineup, including the Scorpio-N, XUV700, and Thar.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor also registered solid gains, with FY’25 volumes rising to 2,75,665 units from 2,14,174—a 28.7 per cent jump. Its market share climbed from 5.41 per cent to 6.64 per cent, bolstered by the popularity of the Innova Hycross, Urban Cruiser HyRyder, and rebadged Maruti models.

Kia India posted stable numbers, selling 2,41,859 units compared to 2,26,323 in the previous year. Its market share edged up slightly to 5.82 per cent, thanks to consistent demand for models like the Seltos and Sonet.

Skoda Auto Volkswagen Group—which includes Skoda, Volkswagen, and Audi—saw a marginal decline, with combined sales falling to 84,222 units in FY’25 from 88,784 in FY’24. The group’s share slipped from 2.24 per cent to 2.03 per cent.

Honda Cars India continued its downward trajectory, registering 64,727 units in FY’25, down from 79,720 in FY’24, resulting in a market share drop to 1.56 per cent. The ageing product lineup and limited SUV presence contributed to the decline.

Meanwhile, MG Motor India bucked the trend with a growth to 57,366 units from 49,975, improving its market share from 1.26 per cent to 1.38 per cent, as newer models like the Windsor as we as older models such as the ZS EV and the Comet EV helped the brand post a positive impact.

French automaker Renault India and Nissan Motor India both recorded declines in volumes and share, pointing to a need for refreshed products and strategies in the highly competitive entry-level and compact segments.

The luxury car segment saw healthy momentum, with Mercedes-Benz Group selling 17,715 units (up from 15,743), and BMW India growing from 13,680 to 14,966 units. Jaguar Land Rover also gained ground, reporting 5,237 units versus 3,827 in FY’24. The rise in premium vehicle sales signals a return of confidence in high-end spending.

Chinese EV maker BYD India nearly doubled its retail volumes to 3,401 units, reflecting rising consumer acceptance of electric mobility in niche urban markets.
