The window headrest for dogs is just one of the accessories Peugeot designed for the Dog Edition Concept, after studying how dogs position themselves in cars.

Peugeot, part of the Stellantis umbrella of brands, has unveiled its one-off E-5008 Dog Edition Concept SUV, intended to reimagine road travel around the safety and comfort of beloved family pets. According to a study quoted by the company, over 60 percent of dog owners plan their road trips and holiday destinations around their pets’ needs.

The Dog Edition concept goes beyond just outfitting a car with accessories — Peugeot, in collaboration with Stellantis Design Studio, says it started by choosing the E-5008 SUV which is large enough to comfortably fit an average family plus dogs and luggage. The company says more than 50 percent of large SUV owners also have a dog.

All colours, interior materials, spaces, and even sounds were designed keeping a dog’s sensory environment in mind. The cabin is finished in blue and yellow, to balance soothing and stimulating elements consistent with how dogs perceive colour. Soft-touch, non slip materials were chosen for comfort and safety.

Stellantis designers studied how dogs position themselves in cars, and came up with a headrest for dogs who love sticking their heads out of windows. The E-5008 Dog Edition Concept is also equipped with a modular mattress that can be placed in the cargo area or on the rear seats. When placed on the ground outdoors during a stop or even at home, it functions as a full bed, creating a sense of familiarity and comfort for a family pet.

Purpose-designed accessories include integrated bowls, a signature Peugeot-branded dog toy, a connected harness, and an electric V2L-powered dryer that can be stored under the boot floor. The company already offers dog-friendly accessories such as dog guards and boot protectors.

Even the car’s navigation system has been tweaked, allowing owners to choose charging stations that are near parks or dog walking areas, so stops can be optimised for all occupants’ comfort.

A Dog Guardian Mode, much like some other carmakers offer, keeps the cabin at a comfortable temperature and allows remote monitoring and alerts, so a dog can be left alone safely.  and alert the owner whenever necessary should the dog remain alone in the vehicle for a short period of time. Even more interestingly, a Dog Retriever function emits a sound that can be used to call a lost dog.

While this concept isn’t going into production, it’s possible that Peugeot and other Stellantis brands will use it to gather feedback, and maybe even implement some features on upcoming cars.

"It was the first time I had to see the world from a dog's perspective in order to design a car. As a dog carer myself, this project was as unusual as it was inspiring. It encouraged us to rethink every detail through the eyes of those who share our everyday adventures," Hugo Nightingale, Global Creative Director at Stellantis Design Studio said in a statement.
