The Kharkhoda plant has been developed around Maruti Suzuki's Suzuki Smart Factory concept.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Thursday jointly inaugurated Maruti Suzuki India's new manufacturing facility at Kharkhoda in Haryana through video conferencing. This is one of the largest investments in India's automobile sector in recent years. The inauguration took place alongside the India-Japan Economic Forum, attended by over 150 Japanese companies, as the two countries sought to strengthen cooperation in manufacturing, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, clean energy and mobility. The event coincided with the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit, held during Takaichi's first official visit to India from July 1 to 3.

Maruti Suzuki Expands Manufacturing Footprint

Kharkhoda becomes Maruti Suzuki's fourth manufacturing facility in India after Gurugram, Manesar and Gujarat. PM Modi had virtually laid the foundation stone for the project in August 2022, while commercial production at the plant began on February 25, 2025.

Spread across nearly 800 acres, the manufacturing plant includes an integrated supplier park designed to improve operational efficiency and strengthen the local manufacturing ecosystem. Maruti Suzuki has committed a total investment of ₹35,000 crore in India, with the fully developed Kharkhoda facility expected to generate more than 21,000 direct jobs, in addition to employment opportunities across component manufacturing, logistics and ancillary industries.

The Kharkhoda plant has been developed around Maruti Suzuki's Suzuki Smart Factory concept and incorporates Industry 5.0-enabled manufacturing technologies. These include artificial intelligence-powered human-aware collaborative robots, or cobots, aimed at improving manufacturing precision, productivity and workplace safety.

The company said the plant will operate entirely on renewable electricity, recycle 100 per cent of its water and function as a Zero Liquid Discharge manufacturing unit. It also plans to commission a biogas plant with a capacity of 10 tonnes per day during FY2026-27 and develop an in-plant railway siding to support greater use of rail transport for vehicle dispatches as part of its sustainability strategy.
