While exact prices and specifications will only be revealed at launch time, Xiaomi has published some teasers already.
Xiaomi has announced a launch date for the Redmi A4 5G, which it says will be India’s most affordable 5G smartphone. The new device, which was first teased at Qualcomm’s Snapdragon for India event in July and subsequently unveiled at the India Mobile Congress last month, is set to be priced starting at under ₹9,000. While no actual launch price has been announced, it is possible that the base variant will meet this target after accounting for bank offers and launch promotions.
The Redmi A4 5G will be based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 SoC. The chipmaker is hoping to spur sales of low-cost 5G-enabled smartphones in developing markets, and had announced a sub-$99 (approximately ₹8,342) price target for smartphone OEMs at the time of this SoC’s launch. In India, the Redmi A4 5G could help 5G penetration among price-sensitive buyers, leading to increased average data consumption and the further proliferation of online services.
Xiaomi has confirmed only a few further details. This phone will have a 6.88-inch 120Hz display and a 5160mAh battery for claimed “all-day” runtime. Fast charging is also listed, but not a specific speed. The phone’s design will also incorporate “premium halo glass”. The company is also promoting this phone being “made in India”. RAM and storage configurations are not yet known.
Units in black and white were displayed at IMC 2024, matching the illustration in the company’s launch confirmation post. The units on display appeared to have dual rear cameras with a flash in a raised circle on the rear, and text describing a 50-megapixel resolution for the primary camera. The secondary one is likely to be a low-cost depth sensor. The phone also had a visible 3.5mm audio jack.
The Snadpragon 4s Gen 2 features two Arm Cortex-A78 performance cores and six more Cortex-A55 efficiency cores. Its integrated Adreno 611 GPU can support a full-HD+ display but interestingly, Qualcomm lists 90Hz as the peak refresh rate. It also supports LPDDR4X RAM, UFS 3.1 storage, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.1, and satellite navigation including the Indian NavIC standard. Quick charging over USB-PD is supported. The chip is manufactured on a 4nm process node.
While all this gives us more hints about the Redmi A4 5G’s capabilities and specifications, full details will only be confirmed at the time of launch on November 20. An Amazon listing indicates that it will be available for sale there as well as through Xiaomi’s own website and offline network. The India launch will mark this phone’s global debut, and it will likely be sold in other countries in the near future.
