Renault Group has announced that its innovative Fireman Access system is now available with a free license to the entire automotive industry. This decision aims to enhance the safety of electric vehicles (EVs) by enabling quicker and more effective firefighting in the event of a battery fire.
Revolutionizing EV Firefighting
Fireman Access is a patented technology developed by Renault in collaboration with fire services. It addresses a critical challenge in EV fires: the difficulty in extinguishing battery fires, which can take hours and require vast amounts of water.
The system features an adhesive disc placed over an opening in the EV battery casing. In a fire, the water jet from a fire hose dislodges the disc, allowing firefighters to directly drench the battery cells and rapidly stop thermal runaway – the primary cause of EV battery fires. This innovation significantly reduces firefighting time and water usage, getting firefighters back into action faster.
A Commitment to Safety
Renault Group CEO Luca de Meo emphasised the company's dedication to road safety, stating, "Innovating to improve road safety is part of who we are at Renault. When it comes to a subject like safety, we need to break down all the barriers."
By offering Fireman Access with a free license, Renault encourages widespread adoption of this technology, ultimately making EVs safer for everyone. The company believes that this collaborative approach is crucial for advancing safety standards across the automotive industry.
How to Access the Technology
Car manufacturers and parts suppliers can obtain a free license for the Fireman Access patents through Renault's open collaborative platform. In return, licensees agree to share any upgrades or improvements they make to the technology with the rest of the community.
A Step Towards Safer Mobility
Renault's initiative is a significant step towards improving EV safety and aligns with the company's commitment to the United Nations' road safety goals. By making this technology accessible to all, Renault demonstrates its leadership in promoting safer mobility for all road users.
