The Model Y is actually one of Sharma's more modestly priced cars.
Rohit Sharma, former captain of India’s national cricket team, has been seen in a new Tesla Model Y. The custom license plates, with the number 3015, allude to the birth dates of his two children. This number has been used on at least one other car he owns, suggesting that he has purchased the Model Y for himself.
The cricketing sensation was seen in videos on social media dating back to early October, attending an awards function and signing autographs while sitting in the dark-coloured car. It is not clear which variant of the Model Y he has purchased, or what options he might have added to it. Tesla announced that Model Y deliveries had commenced at the end of September, although at least one car was handed over to its owner much earlier last month.
The original video, which has now been viewed over three million times, caught the attention of Tesla fan account Teslaconomics. “This is why Tesla doesn’t need to advertise - Rohit Sharma (captain of India’s national cricket team), who has 45M followers on Instagram, just bought a new Tesla Model Y”, the account wrote. While he didn’t add any comment of his own, Tesla CEO Musk reposted it in a seeming endorsement.
Tesla launched the Model Y along with its first Experience Centre in India on July 15, after a years-long wait and multiple changes of plan, and had promised that customers would receive their purchases within the third quarter of this year, which it fulfilled. It also launched its first Supercharger location on schedule. However, the company reportedly delivered only around 60 units, having received approximately 600 orders between July and September, falling below its own expectations. The first batch of Model Ys were shipped in from the company’s Shanghai gigafactory.
The Model Y is priced starting at ₹59.89 lakh for the base variant, while the long-range variant comes in at ₹67.89 lakh, before GST, road tax, and fees. Optional add-ons such as Full Self Driving (which is offered despite not being usable in India yet) and any colour other than the default for the interior and exterior also cost extra.
Even with all the bells and whistles, the Model Y will not be one of Sharma’s most extravagant cars by far. Over the years, his garage has reportedly included a Lamborghini Urus and a Urus SE, a Mercedes-Benz GLS 400D, a BMW M5, and a Range Rover HSE LWB. His more modest transportation options also reportedly include a Škoda Laura and a Toyota Fortuner.
