The Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 has now joined the Assam Fire Brigade as a first-responder fire fighter vehicle, according to an image shared on social media. In the image, a police personnel is seen on the saddle of the fire bike, aimed to act as a first responder in case of a mishap. Compared to the massive fire trucks, these first responders are quicker to reach the accident spot, shaving valuable time in the process, which could be a life or death situation.
The Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 fire fighter comes with a siren and fire extinguisher, both mounted on the engine guard. There are additional red lights, and a water tank mounted at the back. You can also spot an extendable hose and pressure spray, along with a small motor on the adventure motorcycle. Lastly, the fire fighter Himalayan 450 comes with a red and yellow paint scheme, in line with the Fire Brigade colours. The Himalayan 450 seems to be a good fit for the role, given its capability on and off-road. This makes all kinds of terrains accessible, while its powerful 452 cc single-cylinder engine is quick enough despite the additional load.
Indian cities are dense clusters, and accessing narrow streets and bylanes has always been a challenge. More so, when emergency services need to reach the sight of a mishap. In most cases, big vehicles such as fire trucks and even ambulances, may find themselves stuck in narrow lanes where turning a vehicle can be a strenuous task. However, a purpose-built two-wheeler is just the answer to this conundrum.
Fire fighter bikes have also been inducted in other cities by the local fire brigade. For instance, the Mumbai Fire Brigade inducted the Royal Enfield Bullet 350-based fire bike in 2023. These have also been inducted into other cities since. Similarly, the Royal Enfield Himalayan 410 was the choice for the fire bike in Pimpri-Chinchwad, near Pune.
Not just to fight fire, but we’ve seen motorcycles being repurposed for other emergency services in the last few years. First-responder mobile ambulances became popular during the Covid-19 pandemic, accessing narrow lanes while costing a quarter of a full-size ambulance. These bikes were equipped with essentials including a first-aid kit, oxygen cylinder, fire extinguisher and siren.
