S Jaishankar Meets Bhutan PM Tshering Tobgay; India Hands Over 54 Made-In-India Electric Vehicles

External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar met Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay in Thimphu, as India handed over 54 electric vehicles (EVs) made in the country to the Himalayan nation. During the meeting, Jaishankar conveyed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s greetings to Tobgay and reiterated India’s commitment to Bhutan’s continued progress and prosperity.

"Delighted to call on PM Tshering Tobgay of Bhutan in Thimphu today. Conveyed warm greetings of PM Narendra Modi. Deeply value his sentiments for our unique ties of friendship and cooperation. India stands firmly committed to Bhutan's progress and prosperity," Jaishankar posted on X, formerly Twitter, after the meeting.

According to Jaishankar, India is backing Bhutan’s efforts to advance e-mobility and sustainable transport.

The supply of Indian-made EVs adds an automotive component to the broader development partnership between the two neighbouring countries. It also highlights the potential for vehicles manufactured in India to support clean-mobility initiatives in overseas markets.

Bhutan has been pursuing greater adoption of electric mobility as part of its efforts to move towards cleaner transportation.

As electric mobility develops across markets in the region, Indian-made vehicles and related technologies could have a wider role in supporting transport transitions in neighbouring countries.

Jaishankar’s meeting with Tobgay and the EV handover underlines the importance of the India-Bhutan partnership, with sustainability and mobility emerging alongside established areas of bilateral cooperation.
