Samsung has teamed up with its South Korean counterpart Hyundai Motor Group to incorporate its Internet of Things platform, Smart Things, into its automobiles. The two companies will collaborate on home-to-car and car-to-home services, as well as an integrated home energy management service in the era of electric mobility.
This means Smart Things will be used to control the car's air conditioning system or windows. When in the car, users will be able to control the air conditioning system in their homes and also integrate their car into Smart Things routines.
"For example, when a Galaxy smartphone's morning alarm goes off, the curtains will automatically open, and the lights and television will turn on. When users are ready to leave for work, the user's car will adjust itself to an ideal temperature. Additionally, the smartphone and TV screens will display information such as the EV's remaining battery and driving range," said Samsung, giving an example.
"For example, on a hot summer evening commute, the user can activate the 'Home Mode' to turn on the registered air conditioner and air purifier, start the robot vacuum, and turn on the lights for a comfortable and pleasant living space. Alternatively, before going out, the user can initiate the 'Away Mode' to turn off unnecessary lights and start the robot vacuum to create a clean living space to return to, as well as pre-activate the vehicle’s air conditioning to a comfortable temperature," revealed Hyundai.
All this is in the early stages as both have just signed a memorandum of understanding. This will not just include the Hyundai brand but also its sister brand Kia. Hyundai and Kia have also said that they will develop stable service-providing infotainment systems and add OTA updates and USB-based updates to existing vehicles.
Samsung is also working closely with Harman, the audio company behind brands like JBL and AKG. Harman, acquired by Samsung, is focusing on developing car-to-home services with Smart Things integrated. Harman's Ready Update Digital Cockpit package allows users to add Smart Things functions to cars, which is something they could be looking at as well.
