Skoda recently made an announcement regarding the unveiling of another electric SUV, slated for March 15th. Anticipation was high among observers, with many expecting the debut of the Skoda Elroq, positioned slightly below the well-known MEB model Enyaq. However, the Czech automaker surprised everyone by introducing the Epiq, offering a glimpse into the forthcoming small SUV.
Measuring 4.10 meters long, the design study of the Epiq hints at what the series version, likely to be presented under the same name in 2025, might entail. Skoda emphasises its "spacious interior and up to 490 litres of luggage capacity," despite its compact exterior dimensions. However, technical details beyond exterior length and boot volume remain undisclosed, with only a range of over 400 km being mentioned.
The technology underpinning the Epiq will be borrowed from the VW ID.2, currently in development based on the latest iteration of the modular electric drive platform (MEB). This includes a shift to front-wheel drive. While VW had promised an output of 166 kW and a range of up to 450 km for the ID.2 concept, specifics for the Epiq remain elusive. However, it's speculated that the Epiq might achieve a similar range, considering its compact build.
It's worth noting that achieving a 400 km range at the speculated price point of 25,000 euros (approx. ₹ 22.54 lakh) might be challenging. Leaked information suggests that the 450 km version of the VW concept will likely feature a 60 kWh NMC battery, while the base model might come with an LFP battery, speculated to be around 40 kWh. This could also apply to the Epiq.
Production plans for the Epiq involve manufacturing at the Spanish VW plant in Pamplona, alongside the crossover version of the ID.2, likely to be named ID.2 X. Skoda's departure from the current combustion-influenced design language of models like the Enyaq is evident in the Epiq, embracing the "Modern Solid" design language.
The Epiq's design features include a "sculptural bonnet" with Skoda lettering, a "Tech-Deck Face" in glossy black housing electrical devices, and T-shaped LED elements for daytime running lights and indicators. Skoda CEO Klaus Zellmer emphasises Epiq's promise of offering "a lot of cars for an attractive price," with a focus on modern design, everyday range, and user-friendly technologies.
