Yamaha R2 vs KTM RC 200: Spec and Price Comparison

Yamaha just launched the R2 in India, slotting it above the fan favourite R15 in its lineup. Now, the Yamaha R2 and KTM RC 200 represent two aggressive, track-inspired sport motorcycles in the 200 cc segment. So, which one is the more tempting pick?

Design

The Yamaha R2 adopts styling cues from larger R-series machines with a sleek bi-functional LED headlight, LED position lights, a block-style LED tail light, and an aerodynamic front fairing. It features a steel tube diamond frame, keeping kerb weight down to just 149 kg (150 kg for the R2M.

The KTM RC 200 carries a wider stance with a full LED headlamp and an exposed tubular split-trellis frame. The RC 200 weighs 160 kg kerb and offers a larger 13.7-litre fuel tank compared to the R2's 12-litre capacity.

Engine and Gearbox

The new Yamaha R2 is powered by a 204 cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, DOHC 4-valve engine generating a peak output of 26.3 bhp at 10,000 rpm and 19.1 Nm of torque at 8,000 rpm. It is paired with a 6-speed gearbox, assist & slipper clutch, and an available bi-directional quickshifter.

The KTM RC 200 utilises a 199.5 cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, DOHC engine producing 24.7 bhp at 10,000 rpm and 19.2 Nm of torque at 8,000 rpm mated to a 6-speed transmission. The R2 offers higher peak power and a superior power-to-weight ratio.

Suspension and Braking

The Yamaha R2 is equipped with 37 mm upside-down (USD) front forks (adjustable on the R2M) and a linked monocross rear suspension. Braking is handled by a 282 mm front disc with a radially mounted Nissin calliper and a 220 mm rear disc backed by dual-channel ABS.

The KTM RC 200 features thicker 43 mm WP Apex USD front forks paired with a 10-step adjustable WP Apex rear monoshock. Stopping duties on the RC 200 rely on a larger 320 mm front disc with a radially mounted calliper, a 230 mm rear disc, and Supermoto ABS.

Features

Yamaha equips the R2 with a 5-inch full-colour TFT display, Yamaha Ride Control (YRC) featuring Street, Sport, and Rain riding modes, a traction control system, and Y-Connect Bluetooth connectivity. The R2M adds a Smart Key system and adjustable footpegs.

The KTM RC 200 features a 5-inch TFT display providing telemetry readouts, full LED lighting, and Supermoto ABS mode for track riding.

Price in India

In terms of pricing, the Yamaha YZF-R2 ranges between Rs 2.30 lakh and Rs 2.53 lakh (ex-showroom) across three variants: Standard, Quickshifter, and R2M. Meanwhile, the KTM RC 200 is priced at ₹2.31 lakh (ex-showroom).
