Sony has unveiled the PlayStation 5 Pro, an upgraded version of its popular PS5 console, set to launch on November 7. The new PS5 Pro boasts significant graphics processing and performance improvements, catering to the demands of deeply engaged players and game creators alike.
The PS5 Pro features a substantially upgraded GPU, boasting 67% more Compute Units and 28% faster memory than the standard PS5. This enhancement results in up to 45% faster rendering, promising smoother gameplay across compatible titles. Sony has also implemented advanced ray tracing capabilities, allowing for more dynamic light reflections and refractions, with ray casting speeds up to triple those of the current PS5.
A standout feature is the introduction of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-powered upscaling technology that enhances image clarity and detail. It addresses the growing demand for higher-fidelity graphics without compromising frame rates. The console also introduces PS5 Pro Game Boost, which enhances performance for over 8,500 backwards-compatible PS4 games and improves resolution on select titles.
Mark Cerny, the lead architect for PS5 Pro, emphasized the console's ability to simultaneously deliver high frame rates and image quality.
The new console supports Wi-Fi 7 in regions where available and VRR and 8K gaming for compatible setups. Several games will receive free updates to leverage the PS5 Pro's capabilities, identifiable by a "PS5 Pro Enhanced" label. Notable titles include Alan Wake 2, Assassin's Creed: Shadows, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, and The Last of Us Part II Remastered.
Aesthetically, the PS5 Pro maintains consistency with the PS5 family, featuring the same height and width as the original PS5 and the current model. It remains compatible with existing PS5 accessories, including PlayStation VR2, DualSense Edge controller, and audio peripherals.
The PS5 Pro will be released on November 7, 2024, with pre-orders starting September 26, 2024. It is priced at USD 699.99 (GBP 699.99 / EUR 799.99 / JPY 119,980) and includes a 2TB SSD, DualSense wireless controller, and pre-installed Astro's Playroom. The console will be a disc-less model, with an optional Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive sold separately. India pricing and availability details are yet to be revealed.
