Stellantis, one of the largest automotive conglomerates, has joined the likes of BMW and Mercedes-Benz as it now unveiled its Level 3 autonomous driving capability called STLA AutoDrive. Stellantis says it is ready for deployment.
STLA AutoDrive has SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) Level 3 functionality which Stellantis claims will help drivers have a hands-free and eyes-off experience. The first-generation version, called STLA AutoDrive 1.0, allows automated driving at speeds of up to 60 kmph and it can be used at night or in light rain/road spray. However, Stellantis is working on increasing the speed to up to 95 kmph as well as off-road automation.
Ned Curic, Chief Engineering and Technology Officer, Stellantis, said, “By handling routine driving tasks, STLA AutoDrive will enhance the driving experience, making time behind the wheel more efficient and enjoyable.”
Stellantis claims the system has been designed for use by commuters in dense traffic areas. The system can help drivers catch up on emails or news, watch a movie, read a book or just relax. All of which is extremely dangerous if there’s no electronic aid like this.
Once traffic and environmental conditions are met, the car notifies the driver that the STLA AutoDrive is available to be used and can be activated via a physical button. Stellantis says the system will maintain safe distances, adjust speed and manage steering and braking according to the conditions around the car.
All of these are done by an array of sensors that will be fitted onto the car with the STLA AutoDrive feature. It also gets an inbuilt sensor cleaning system to keep components clear. Stellantis also claims its engineers have refined the system to feel human-like and have predictable behaviour. At speeds higher than 60 kmph, STLA AutoDrive has the capability of adaptive cruise control and lane-centring functions with Level 2 and Level 2+, which Stellantis can be differentiated by hands-on and hands-on, eyes-off, respectively. Level 3, according to Stellantis is hands-off, eyes-off.
