Tata AutoComp, TCS, Tata Technologies, and Tata Electronics, are positioning themselves to play a pivotal role in Tesla's supply chain.
According to a report by ET Auto, Tata Group subsidiaries have become key suppliers to Tesla. As Tesla seeks a broader footprint in the Indian market, Tata Group companies, including Tata AutoComp, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Tata Technologies, and Tata Electronics, are positioning themselves to play a pivotal role in the EV giant's supply chain.

The Tata Group's involvement with Tesla extends beyond India. The companies have reportedly signed global supply agreements contributing to the estimated $2 billion worth of Indian supplies to Tesla in FY24. While these agreements currently support Tesla’s international operations, the possibility of Tesla setting up manufacturing operations in India could signal deeper collaboration in the future.
In addition to Tata Group, Tesla is reportedly sourcing critical parts from over a dozen Indian companies, including Samvardhana Motherson, Suprajit Engineering, Sona BLW Precision Forgings, Varroc Engineering, Bharat Forge, and Sandhar Technologies. The components sourced range from wiring harnesses, electric motors, gearboxes, forged parts, and castings to sheet metal, high-value electronics, suspension systems, and electric powertrains.
Tesla’s interest in Indian suppliers is also influenced by its ongoing efforts to reduce reliance on China and Taiwan. The automaker has reportedly instructed its suppliers for vehicles sold outside China to relocate component manufacturing out of these regions as early as next year.

In parallel with its supplier engagement, Tesla is exploring the possibility of establishing a manufacturing base in India. The company is in talks with multiple states, including Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Telangana, regarding potential factory locations. This move aligns with Tesla's strategy to localise production and strengthen its supply chain resilience while potentially benefiting from tax concessions and duty waivers.
