The Bihar facility, with capacity to dismantle 15,000 end-of-life vehicles annually, extends Tata Motors' nationwide push into organised vehicle recycling.
Tata Motors has opened a registered vehicle scrapping facility in Patna, taking its network of such centres across India to 12, as the company deepens its presence in the country's still-nascent end-of-life vehicle recycling business. The facility, called Re.Wi.Re, was inaugurated on Monday by Bihar's transport minister, Damodar Rawat, and can dismantle up to 15,000 vehicles a year.
Spread over 5.5 acres, the Patna centre is run by the Kalahanu Bothra Group and will handle vehicles across all brands and segments, including two- and three-wheelers, in addition to passenger and commercial vehicles. It joins existing Tata Motors scrapping facilities in Jaipur, Bhubaneswar, Surat, Chandigarh, Delhi NCR, Pune, Guwahati, Raipur, Lucknow, Kolkata and Ahmedabad.
The expansion comes as India's National Vehicle Scrappage Policy, introduced to phase out old and polluting vehicles, gathers pace. Rawat said the Patna facility was "a significant step towards safer roads and a cleaner transport ecosystem" for Bihar, adding that it would help retire unfit vehicles "in a scientific and responsible manner" while nudging owners towards newer, more fuel-efficient replacements.

Rajesh Kaul, vice president and business head for trucks at Tata Motors, said the company now runs the widest network of registered scrapping facilities in the country, with capacity to responsibly dismantle close to two lakh end-of-life vehicles annually across its centres. He credited state governments, local authorities and industry partners for supporting the rollout.
Each Re.Wi.Re facility operates on a fully digitalised, paperless model. Commercial vehicles, two-wheelers and three-wheelers go through cell-type dismantling, while passenger vehicles are processed on a line-type system, with dedicated stations for handling tyres, batteries, fuel, oils and other fluids and gases. Every vehicle is documented before dismantling, a process meant to ensure compliance with the scrappage policy's disposal norms.

Organised vehicle recycling remains a relatively small part of India's automotive ecosystem, even as the government has pushed incentives — including rebates on new vehicle purchases — to formalise a trade that has historically operated through informal scrapyards. For manufacturers, expanding scrappage infrastructure also supports raw material recovery and dovetails with broader circular-economy commitments, an area receiving increasing scrutiny as vehicle populations age across Indian cities.
Tata Motors, India's largest commercial vehicle manufacturer, has been among the more active participants in building this scrapping infrastructure since the policy's rollout, alongside similar initiatives from other automakers. The company's commercial vehicle business was reorganised last year, following a scheme of arrangement effective 29 October 2025 that renamed TML Commercial Vehicles Limited as Tata Motors Limited, separating it from the passenger vehicle business now housed under Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited.
With the Patna facility, Tata Motors has signalled that scrappage capacity will continue to expand in tandem with its commercial vehicle operations, particularly in states where vehicle fleets are ageing and enforcement of scrappage norms is tightening.
