Tata Motors is preparing to launch an electric version of its Safari SUV ahead of this year's festive season, making it the brand's first three-row electric vehicle and its new flagship EV, displacing the Harrier EV from that position, Autocar has reported. Internally referred to by the codename "Tayrona", the Safari EV will be built on the same acti.ev+ platform that underpins the Harrier EV, an ICE-to-EV conversion rather than a ground-up electric architecture.
The Safari EV is expected to carry over the Harrier EV's battery and motor options: a 65kWh unit and a larger 75kWh pack, both paired with a single rear motor in rear-wheel-drive configuration as standard. A dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant is also anticipated, mirroring the setup available on the 75kWh Harrier EV.
On range, the Harrier EV's ARAI-certified figures stand at 627km for the 75kWh rear-wheel-drive variant, 622km for the 75kWh AWD, and 538km for the 65kWh model. Given that the Safari is both larger and heavier than the Harrier, its electric derivative is likely to return marginally lower official range numbers. Support for DC fast charging at up to 100kW is also expected.
The Safari EV is set to inherit several features from the Harrier EV, including an expanded roster of terrain modes, Normal, Snow/Grass, Mud-Ruts, Sand, Rock Crawl and Custom, along with a multi-link rear suspension using frequency-dependent dampers for a more refined ride.
Visually, the Safari EV is expected to follow the template Tata has applied across its electric range, with a blanked-off front grille, lightly revised bumpers, EV-specific badging and aerodynamically optimised alloy wheel designs. Its overall dimensions are likely to remain unchanged from the standard petrol Safari.
