World Environment Day 2024 centres on the theme of "Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience," highlighting the urgent need to restore our planet's degraded landscapes and natural resources.

As environmental challenges intensify, major technology companies say they are stepping up their efforts to make their operations and products sustainable. With billions in annual energy costs at stake, transitioning to renewable operations makes sound business sense for tech giants. Apple, Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta, among others, have publicised some significant investments and changes that they are making to reduce their environmental footprints and set new standards for corporate responsibility in the tech industry.

Google

Google has been a leader in renewable energy investment and sustainable product design. The company achieved carbon neutrality in 2007 and has pledged to run its datacentres and offices on 100% renewable energy by 2030. The search giant recently invested over $2 billion in wind and solar projects, bringing its total renewable energy portfolio to more than 10 Gigawatts.

  • Datacenters: Google says its datacentres are among the most efficient in the world, using 50% less energy and 80% less water than typical facilities. The company also uses AI to optimise cooling and reduce energy consumption.

  • Sustainable products: Google's Pixel smartphone lineup, Home smart speakers and Nest thermostats use recycled aluminium, glass, plastic and other eco-friendly materials.

Apple

Apple has long been at the forefront of environmental sustainability. The company has committed to being 100% carbon neutral across its entire business, manufacturing supply chain, and product life cycle by 2030.

  • Renewable energy: Apple already powers its corporate operations worldwide with 100% renewable energy and is working to extend this to its entire supply chain.

  • Recycled materials: The latest iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks incorporate recycled materials, including 100% recycled aluminium enclosures and 100% recycled rare earth elements in the iPhone’s Taptic Engines.

  • Daisy, the recycling robot: Apple's innovative recycling robot, Daisy, disassembles old iPhones to recover valuable materials that can be reused in new devices, which it says significantly reduces electronic waste.

Amazon

Amazon has made significant strides in sustainability through its Climate Pledge, which commits the company to achieving net-zero carbon emissions across its operations by 2040, a decade ahead of the Paris Agreement.

  • Renewable energy projects: Amazon is the world’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy and has installed solar panels in dozens of fulfilment centres globally, as well as numerous wind and solar projects around the globe.

  • Electric delivery vehicles: Amazon has invested heavily in electric delivery vehicles and drones, aiming to have 100,000 electric vans on the road by 2030 to decrease its carbon footprint from shipping.

Microsoft

Microsoft has been carbon neutral since 2012 and has set some of the most ambitious sustainability goals in the tech industry, including being carbon-negative by 2030 and removing all carbon it has ever emitted by 2050.

  • AI for Earth: This initiative uses AI to tackle environmental challenges, supporting projects that address issues such as water conservation, agriculture, and biodiversity.

  • Sustainable datacenters: Microsoft has reduced datacentre energy usage by over 60% and is exploring innovative solutions such as underwater datacentres, which could be powered by renewable energy and could offer greater energy efficiency.

Meta

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, achieved 100% renewable energy for its global operations in 2020. It has also committed to significant sustainability goals that include:

  • Renewable energy: The company is working on powering its datacentres with renewable energy sources, ensuring that its vast network of social media platforms operates sustainably.

  • Net zero carbon: Meta aims to reach net zero carbon emissions across its entire value chain by 2030. This includes reducing emissions across its supply chain and improving the energy efficiency of its products.

  • Sustainable facilities: Meta says its headquarters and other facilities are built with sustainability in mind, incorporating energy-efficient designs and eco-friendly materials.
