Tesla has been testing its self-driving Model Y on the streets of Austin for the past few days.
Tesla’s self-driving technology will now reach new heights! The all-electric car company’s CEO and co-founder Elon Musk announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the Model Y will start reaching its customers by driving itself from next week onwards, i.e. June. This announcement comes after Musk confirmed that Tesla has been testing self-driven Model Y cars on the streets of Austin for the past couple of days “with no incident”. This announcement comes after it was announced last week that Tesla’s Robotaxis will also start to roll out in the same city from June onwards.
The selection of Austin for Tesla’s self-driving technology has been very strategic right from the start. Besides the fact that it has significant presence in the area via its Gigafactory Texas, Austin’s relatively navigable urban layout is another major advantage which will allow the company to develop its autonomous driving technology called Full Self Driving (FSD). However, during this initial phase Tesla will include human safety operators to monitor the vehicles and ensure passenger safety and compliance, at least with its Robotaxis. Will the same be provided with private cars as well is yet to be confirmed.
Moreover, the Tesla Model Y has also been touted to launch in India alongside the Model 3. The electric car company has already submitted applications for its homologation in the country. But this is not the first time that Tesla has filed applications in India and with Trump’s new controversial tariff structure, their arrival has been shrouded in further complications.
Either Way, having self-driven Teslas in India has been a sought-after dream for many Indians for quite some time now. Even Musk has been wanting to enter India but with the Indian government asking the eccentric billionaire to set up a manufacturing plant in India, the situation has been dicey for quite some time now.
