Tesla To Start India Operations On July 15

After months and even years of anticipation of Tesla coming to India, we can finally confirm that the American electric vehicle (EV) major is set to start its journey in the country with an announcement on Tuesday, the 15th of July. 

Tesla will open its first showroom, of around 4000 sq ft, in the business district of Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai. Tesla will continue its Direct-to-Customer retail model with a company-owned showroom in India too, but the brand will have local partner(s) for after-sales support. 

The $97.7 billion EV major, one of the largest automotive companies in the world, is in the process of building its India team. There have been multiple instances of job applications being advertised on its website and LinkedIn, with openings in sales, customer service and operations, and even looking for Autopilot test drivers in Mumbai and Delhi.

Tesla may offer multiple models in India, starting possibly with its entry-level offering, Model 3.  There have been multiple sightings of test mules, and multiple reports indicating the Model 3 and Model Y could be the first set of Tesla models for Indian customers

Given the significance of the India entry, both for customers and for Tesla, it won’t be surprising if Tesla CEO Elon Musk arrives in India to announce the start of his company’s operations here.
