SUVs may have been gaining popularity, but the highest-selling models in India are still hatchbacks.
While SUVs have been gaining popularity, the highest-selling models in India have always been hatchbacks. This didn’t change in 2023 either, as the highest-selling model in the country was a humble hatchback. Notably, sales figures for December are not out yet so all the figures in this list comprise sales from January to November 2023. Unsurprisingly, only Maruti Suzuki’s cars feature on this list.
Total sales in 2023 - 1,92,723 units
The most sold hatchback in the country is the Wagon R. Maruti Suzuki sold the most units of the Wagon R in October 2023, with 22,080 units. The Wagon R has two engine options – a 66 bhp, 89 Nm, 1.0-litre petrol mill and an 89 bhp, 113 Nm, 1.2-litre petrol mill. Both get the choice of either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT. The Wagon R also gets the option of a factory-fitted CNG kit but only with the 1.0-litre engine and in CNG mode, it produces 56 bhp and 82.1 Nm.
Total sales in 2023 - 1,91,666 units
Coming in at a close second position is probably India’s most loved hatchback, the Swift. The hatchback saw the highest sales in October 2023, with Maruti Suzuki selling 20,598 units that month. The Swift is available with a 1.2-litre petrol engine producing 89 bhp and 113 Nm, mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT. It also gets a factory-fitted CNG kit with which it produces 76 bhp and 98.5 NM and is only available with a 5-speed manual gearbox.
Total sales in 2023 - 1,87,429 units
Maruti’s premium hatchback saw its highest-ever sales at the start of the year, with January recording a maximum of 20,466 units sold. It is based on the same platform as the Swift, and just like it, the Baleno also gets an 89 bhp, 113 Nm, 1.2-litre petrol engine mated to a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT. Like the Swift, it also gets a factory-fitted CNG kit and produces 76 bhp and 98.5 Nm in CNG mode.
Total sales in 2023 - 1,43,510 units
The only sedan in this list is the Dzire. The sub-compact sedan saw its highest-ever sales in February 2023, with 16,798 units sold. Like the Swift and Baleno, the Dzire also gets an 89 bhp, 113 Nm, 1.2-litre petrol engine with either a 5-speed manual or 5-speed AMT gearbox. It also has a factory-fitted CNG kit and produces 76 bhp and 98.5 Nm in CNG mode.
Total sales in 2023 - 1,24,702 units
Maruti Suzuki’s smallest hatchback, the Alto K10, still sells like hotcakes, averaging around 11,000 units per month. The Alto K10 saw its highest-ever sales in January 2023, when it sold 21,411 units. Interestingly, this also includes sales figures for the Alto 800 which was discontinued in April. The Alto K10 is available with a 1.0-litre petrol engine producing 66 bhp and 89 Nm and is mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT.
