We also bring you information about the promising developments for these market leaders of June 2024.
Honda claimed the pole position in the June 2024 scooter sales race. It has recorded a staggering near-90% year-over-year sales increase. This comes as the overall domestic scooter market witnessed a healthy growth spurt compared to motorcycles. Here are the top 5 brands in the scooter market and their upcoming product details.
The Japanese giant continues to reign supreme in the scooter segment with its iconic Activa model as a best seller. The Activa has propelled Honda to sell a whopping 2,65,960 units in June 2024, compared to just 1,40,019 units the previous year. Interestingly, there are rumours that Honda might introduce a new electric product by the end of the year. This could potentially be an electric version of the Honda Activa, featuring a convenient swappable battery system to cater to the growing demand for eco-friendly transportation. On the current CNG trend in the market, there have been CNG kits developed by various manufacturers for the Honda Activa in the past. Honda would greatly benefit if they actually provide factory fit CNG kit for the Honda Activa in the coming times.
Claiming the second spot, TVS has registered sales of 1,23,912 units. This translates to a respectable year-over-year growth of 8.6%. The TVS Ntorq 125 and Jupiter models continue to be crowd favourites. TVS is reportedly planning to launch a CNG-powered scooter in the coming months, a move that could be a game-changer for the company. While TVS has not launched any completely new products in the H1 2024, we can expect an update for the Jupiter range and the CNG scooter could actually direct a lot of lost attention towards the company. Here are some more details about it.
Maintaining consistent growth, Suzuki secured the third position with 69,853 units sold, reflecting a 16.6% year-over-year increase. Scooters are a major contributor to Suzuki's overall two-wheeler sales in India. Suzuki is also making strides in the electric scooter segment. Its upcoming electric scooter offering, codenamed XF091, is expected to launch in the first quarter of next year with a projected annual volume of 25,000 units. Unlike the e-Burgman scooter Suzuki showcased earlier with a swappable battery, the XF091 is likely to have a fixed battery pack. The exact branding of this e-scooter remains unknown, but considering Suzuki's success with the Access and Burgman models, it could be named under one of those established brands.
Leader in overall two-wheeler sales, Hero MotoCorp surprisingly settled for fourth place in the scooter segment. It saw a slight decline of 2.8% compared to June 2023, selling 28,871 units. However, it continues to dominate the motorcycle market. Interestingly, Hero might be prepping up for a refresh in the scooter segment. Leaked images suggest an imminent launch of a new Hero Destini 125 ICE scooter, possibly in the coming months. Read more about it
Rounding out the top 5 is Yamaha with 26,031 units sold. The Japanese brand has showcased a moderate year-over-year growth of 13.1%. Unlike some competitors, Yamaha witnessed higher sales for motorcycles compared to scooters in June 2024. Its future direction for scooters in India remains unclear. While it showcased some bigger maxi scooters at the Bharat Mobility event, there haven't been any concrete announcements regarding its official launch or plans for the segment.
The positive growth trend in the scooter market suggests a growing preference for this convenient and easy mode of transportation especially in the urban market. With EVs catching up we might soon see EV brand in this list of Top 5 scooter brands of the month.
