Toyota’s chairman, Akio Toyoda, has stirred controversy by claiming that one electric vehicle (EV) pollutes as much as three hybrid cars.
Made during a recent industry event, the remark has drawn sharp criticism from scientists and environmentalists, who argue it oversimplifies the complex lifecycle emissions of vehicles.
Scientific Rebuttal
Researchers have challenged Toyoda’s assertion, pointing to studies showing EVs typically have lower lifetime emissions than hybrids, especially when charged with renewable energy.
A 2024 International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) report found that EVs produce 60-70% fewer emissions than internal combustion engine vehicles over their lifecycle, even accounting for battery production.
Hybrids, while efficient, rely on fossil fuels, limiting their environmental edge. Critics argue Toyoda’s claim ignores grid decarbonisation and advancements in battery recycling.
Industry Context
Toyoda’s statement aligns with Toyota’s cautious approach to EVs, favouring hybrids and hydrogen vehicles.
The company has faced scrutiny for lagging in EV adoption, with only 2% of its 2024 sales from fully electric models. Meanwhile, competitors like BYD and Tesla dominate the EV market.
Some see the remark as a defence of Toyota’s hybrid-heavy strategy, amid pressure to accelerate its EV roadmap.
Battery production for EVs is resource-intensive, but hybrids’ ongoing fuel use tips the scales over time. Experts stress that regional energy grids and driving patterns matter. For instance, in coal-heavy grids, EVs’ benefits shrink, but in greener regions like Europe, they shine.
With global EV popularity soaring, Toyota may need to rethink its stance to stay competitive in a rapidly evolving market.
