Let's dive into the specifications and features of three foldable smartphones to see how they stack up against each other.
The Vivo X Fold3 Pro is the latest entrant in the foldable smartphone segment in India, posing a direct threat to the Samsung Galaxy ZFold 5 and the OnePlus Open. Let's dive into the specifications and features of the Vivo X Fold3 Pro, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, and OnePlus Open to see how they stack up against each other.
Vivo's X Fold3 Pro showcases a slim profile when unfolded, measuring just 5.2mm thick, making it the thinnest of the trio. Its carbon fibre hinge adds durability without excessive weight, tipping the scales at 236g.
Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 measures 6.1mm thick when unfolded and is slightly heavier at 253g. It also has Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on its folded front and back, with an "Armor aluminium" frame for enhanced drop resistance.
The OnePlus Open splits the difference in weight at 239g or 245g, depending on the back material - glass or eco-leather. It measures 5.8 mm when unfolded and sits comfortably between its competitors.
All three devices offer water resistance, with the Vivo and Samsung leading at IPX8 (up to 1.5m for 30 minutes), while the OnePlus Open provides a more modest IPX4 splash resistance.
The Vivo X Fold3 Pro features an 8.03-inch LTPO 2K+ resolution AMOLED main display, offering a peak brightness of 4,500 nits with a 120Hz refresh rate. The cover display measures 6.53 inches and provides a 2748 × 1172 pixels resolution AMOLED screen with the same brightness levels and refresh rate as the main screen. Both displays support HDR10+ and Dolby Vision playback. The X Fold 3 Pro has a larger cover screen and main display than the Fold 5 and OnePlus Open.
Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 5 unfolds to a 7.6-inch AMOLED display with 1812 x 2176 pixels resolution. It also supports HDR10+ and a 120Hz refresh rate. The 6.2-inch cover display uses the same panel technology, protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2, but it has a slightly lower resolution of 2316 x 904 pixels.
The OnePlus Open features a 7.82-inch main display with LTPO3 Flexi-fluid AMOLED technology and a claimed 2,800-nit peak brightness. Its 6.31-inch cover display shares similar specs and is protected by Ceramic Guard. Both screens are certified for Dolby Vision playback.
The Vivo X Fold3 Pro is powered by the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset with a Cortex-X4 prime core running at 3.3 GHz. This makes it the only foldable smartphone in India to pack the latest Gen 3 SoC. It's available with 16GB RAM and up to 1TB storage.
The X Fold3 Pro runs on Android 14-based Funtouch OS 14, which features a multi-tasking split-screen, a taskbar, Fold to Split, and AI features in Notes, Recording, and Browser.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and OnePlus Open pack the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, with slight variations in CPU clock speeds. Samsung offers up to 12GB RAM and 1TB storage, while OnePlus provides 16GB RAM with 512GB storage.
The OnePlus Open runs on OxygenOS 14 and offers multi-tasking and taskbar features similar to the X Fold3 Pro. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Fold5 also offers these features but adds support for the S Pen stylus.
Vivo has collaLife'sd with Zeiss on its triple-camera setup, which features a 50MP primary camera, a 64MP periscope telephoto with 3x optical zoom, and a 50MP ultrawide camera. It can shoot 8K videos at 30fps and 4K at 60fps with features like 4K Cinematic mode. There are dual 32 MP selfie cameras on the main and cover displays.
The triple-camera arSamsung'sonarray on the Samsung Z Fold5 includes a 50MP primary camera, a 10MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom, and a 12MP ultrawide camera. It also supports 8K video at 30fps. For selfies, it has a 4MP under-display camera for the main display and a 10MP cover camera.
The OnePlus Open, with Hasselblad Color Calibration, offers a 48MP primary camera, a 64MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom, and a 48MP ultrawide camera. Video recording tops out at 4K 60fps with Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support. It's got a 20MP camera on the main display and a 32MP selfie camera on the cover display.
Vivo takes the lead with the biggest 5,700 mAh battery among the three foldables. It supports 100W wired charging speed, promising 1-100% in 31 minutes. It also supports 50W wireless and reverse wireless charging.
Samsung's 4,400 mAh battery offers 25W wired (50% in 30 minutes), 15W wireless, and 4.5W reverse wireless charging. While the battery life is efficient, it lags behind Vivo in terms of capacity and charging speed.
The OnePlus Open strikes a balance with a 4,805 mAh battery and 67W wired charging, claiming 1-100% in 42 minutes. It also offers reverse wired charging.
Vivo's debut of the X Fold3 Pro sets a high bar in the foldable smartphone market, combining cutting-edge display technology, superior performance, and a stellar camera system backed by Zeiss optics. Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 5 remains a strong contender with its refined design and versatile features, while OnePlus Open offers a compelling alternative with its Hasselblad camera partnership and impressive display.
Each foldable brings unique strengths to the table, and ultimately, the choice among these foldables will depend on individual preferences, whether it's Vivo's impressive hardware, Samsung's brand reliability or OnePlus offering the best of both worlds.
