The segment is among the most crowded in the Indian market, populated by strong-selling rivals and, notably, dominated in recent years by Volkswagen's own sister brand.
Volkswagen is finally entering India's most fought-over car segment. Thomas Schäfer, Member of the Group Board of Management, CEO Volkswagen Passenger Cars Brand, confirmed in an interview with ACKO Drive that the brand will bring a sub-4-metre compact SUV to India — a space it has stayed out of for years despite the segment's runaway popularity.
Asked directly about the timing, Schäfer didn't dress it up. "It is still the biggest segment," he said. "You've got to play in the segment if you need to be relevant in the market." He acknowledged the brand was late to the party, noting the car is "overdue of course, but we believe now is the right time to bring it, and are very excited to do so."
The segment is among the most crowded in the Indian market, populated by strong-selling rivals and, notably, dominated in recent years by Volkswagen's own sister brand within the group. Schäfer was careful to frame the new SUV not as a rebadge exercise but as a car built to VW's own standards. "If we do a car in that segment, it's got to be a true [Volkswagen]," he said. "It has to be touch and feel, and we will deliver on that." He added that he believes "there is enough space for another car in it," despite the segment's saturation.
The sub-4m SUV format itself is something of an Indian oddity in global terms. As Schäfer explained, it is "an almost unique segment to India so it's nowhere localised elsewhere." That, he suggested, opens up an unusual opportunity: a car developed and built only for India could eventually be exported to other markets that want that specific body style, without ever being localised anywhere else.
That export angle isn't hypothetical for Volkswagen — the brand has already built a substantial outbound business from its Indian operations. Schäfer pointed out that VW has shipped "700,000 cars" from India "to over 40 markets in the last couple of years," including unexpected destinations such as Mexico — "another automotive nation," as he put it — which he sees as a two-way benefit: "Both benefit from it... both markets."
The compact SUV announcement comes as Volkswagen tries to reset its India narrative after a quiet stretch and amid swirling speculation about the brand's broader strategy in the country, including talk of a potential local partner.
For now, no specific model name, timeline has been disclosed but the car will be based on the MQB-A0 IN platform. Still, the confirmation itself — direct from VW's global passenger car chief — puts an end to months of speculation over whether the brand would ever move into India's largest volume segment.
