Skoda is considering importing the Kylaq to Europe to fill an entry-level budget gap left by discontinued city cars, as affordable EV projects face delays.
Following the steady shrinking of the European city car segment, Skoda Auto is actively exploring the business rationale of introducing cheaper, combustion-engined vehicles to its lineup.
The Czech automaker is currently evaluating plans to standardise and import the India-focused Kylaq compact crossover to bridge a widening affordability gap in its domestic European markets. According to a report, this potential strategic expansion surfaces as conventional entry-level superminis continue to experience sharp upward price escalations across Europe.
The European entry-level passenger vehicle landscape has transformed quite a bit over recent years due to the complete discontinuation of affordable urban runabouts like the Ford Ka, Peugeot 108, and Skoda’s own Citigo. This vacuum has left budget-conscious buyers unserved, forcing them into larger hatchback segments where options like the Skoda Fabia.

In sharp contrast, the Kylaq, which is India-exclusive for the time being, could be placed below the Euro-spec Fabia at a more affordable price point. Architecturally, the Kylaq is constructed on the heavily localised MQB A0 IN platform, an adapted derivative of the Volkswagen Group's global small car architecture that Skoda assumed independent responsibility for managing in 2021.
Bringing the vehicle to Europe would require engineering modifications to elevate its overall fit, finish, emission compliance, and crash-test performance to meet rigid approval standards.
This exploration of affordable petrol options for Europe also coincides with a delay in Skoda's entry-level EV. Skoda previously withdrew from co-developing the Volkswagen Group's ID Every1 concept, which is slated to replace the Volkswagen Up city car. Citing the slower-than-expected mass adoption of battery-electric vehicles globally, the brand has prioritised its existing internal combustion engine models which continue to yield profitability.
