CJ Darcl has linked the move to broader sustainability goals across its multimodal logistics network.
CJ Darcl Logistics has expanded its sustainability push by inducting its first heavy-duty Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) in partnership with Volvo. The development marks a shift from pilot-level electric mobility experiments to higher-capacity, real-world logistics operations, and signals a more mature phase in the company’s decarbonisation roadmap.
The new vehicle is the first heavy-duty BEV in CJ Darcl’s portfolio and also the third heavy-duty electric truck launched by Volvo Trucks in India. That places CJ Darcl among the early adopters of this technology in the country, especially in the commercial logistics space where operational reliability and load capability matter as much as sustainability claims.
The company said the induction reflects its broader intent to integrate cleaner technologies into everyday operations, rather than treating electric mobility as a standalone demonstration project. It is a measured transition, but a notable one.
According to Volvo, the Volvo-CJ Darcl partnership was developed over 18 months and included detailed technical, route, payload and integration assessments. That kind of preparation is important in heavy-duty freight, where even a small mismatch between vehicle capability and route conditions can affect efficiency.

Volvo’s experience in electric powertrains and its position in India’s commercial vehicle market appear to have played a key role in supporting the transition. The collaboration is being positioned as a practical step toward live deployment, rather than a symbolic one.
According to CJ Darcl, the induction supports its interim decarbonisation strategy focused on measuring, reporting and reducing Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. The company has also linked the move to broader sustainability goals across its multimodal logistics network.
Nikhil Agarwal, President of CJ Darcl Logistics Ltd., said, “Sustainability is becoming central to how logistics networks are designed and operated. With this induction, we are moving towards integrating cleaner technologies into mainstream operations. As the industry evolves, we, at CJ DARCL Logistics, are on a mission to become a carbon-neutral company. By promoting sustainable practices, we are actively working towards achieving this goal while setting an example for the logistics industry.”
This is not CJ Darcl’s first step into electric mobility. In 2024, under the theme “Driving Towards a Greener Tomorrow,” the company deployed electric vehicles for intra-city aftermarket supply in Bengaluru. The latest induction extends that approach into heavier and more demanding freight operations. With a pan-India network spanning 6,691 locations, a vendor base of 554,781, and FY25 cargo movement of 22.42 million MT, CJ Darcl’s EV adoption could have wider implications as it scales.
