Volvo is preparing to make waves with the upcoming unveiling of a "substantially refreshed" version of its flagship SUV, the XC90, during the much-anticipated 90/90 Day event on September 4. This event will also feature the debut of the fully electric Volvo EX90, marking a significant milestone in the Swedish automaker's ongoing journey towards sustainability. The simultaneous launch of these two models underscores Volvo's strategic push to expand its hybrid offerings while also advancing its electric vehicle (EV) lineup.

The updated Volvo XC90 represents a crucial step in Volvo’s broader strategy to cater to a diverse market that includes both traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) customers and those leaning towards electrification. The refreshed XC90 will now be offered exclusively with a hybrid powertrain, aligning with the global trend towards more sustainable automotive technologies.
Volvo has teased the updated XC90, revealing subtle yet impactful design changes. The refreshed model will feature a sculpted bonnet and updates to the iconic Thor’s Hammer LED headlights, elements that have become synonymous with Volvo’s design language. These aesthetic tweaks, while modest, are expected to keep the XC90 visually aligned with its all-electric counterpart, the EX90.

In addition to the exterior refinements, the new XC90 is likely to see significant upgrades in its interior and technology offerings. Following in the footsteps of the EX90, the refreshed XC90 is expected to adopt a minimalist interior design, centered around a 14.5-inch vertically oriented touchscreen powered by Volvo’s Google-based infotainment system. This system is known for its user-friendly interface and seamless integration of Google services, offering a familiar and intuitive experience for tech-savvy customers.
One of the most anticipated technological advancements in the new XC90 is the potential inclusion of a LiDAR-based surround-view sensing system. This cutting-edge technology, coupled with eight cameras and radar, is designed to enhance safety and driver assistance capabilities, positioning the XC90 at the forefront of automotive innovation. LiDAR technology, which uses laser beams to create detailed 3D maps of the vehicle’s surroundings, is particularly valuable for its accuracy in detecting objects and improving autonomous driving features.
The Volvo EX90 is set to be a game-changer in the electric SUV market, featuring a three-row seating arrangement and a 111 kWh battery pack. This substantial battery capacity is expected to deliver a WLTP range of up to 600 km, making it a strong contender in the growing field of long-range electric SUVs.
While the international launch of the EX90 is set for September 4, its India debut is scheduled for 2026, giving the Indian market ample time to prepare for the arrival of this flagship electric SUV.
