Waymo Recalls 3,871 Robotaxis Over Software Issue

Waymo is recalling 3,871 robotaxis in the United States after identifying a software flaw that could allow vehicles to enter closed freeway construction zones and continue operating at speed, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, news agency Reuters reported.

The recall affects certain vehicles equipped with the company’s Fifth Generation Automated Driving System (ADS).

According to the regulator, the issue stems from the system’s inability to consistently recognise restricted construction areas on freeways, creating a potential safety risk during operation.

In response, Waymo has limited the operational scope of affected vehicles by restricting freeway driving. The company will also deploy an over-the-air software update to improve the system’s ability to identify vehicle location and avoid entering construction zones.

The update will be carried out at no cost to customers, the NHTSA said.
