WhatsApp obscures the user's IP address, essentially shielding their actual location from being disclosed during calls.
WhatsApp's most recent update has bolstered user privacy by introducing the ability to mask IP addresses during calls on both iOS and Android platforms. With the activation of the "Protect IP address in calls" setting, WhatsApp obscures the user's IP address, essentially shielding their actual location from being disclosed to the other party. This update not only enhances privacy but also fortifies defenses against sophisticated cyber threats targeting user data.
To activate this enhanced privacy feature, users should navigate to 'Settings', proceed to the 'Privacy' section, and then to 'Advanced'. Here, they can toggle on the "Protect IP address in calls" option.
However, it's noteworthy that this increased privacy may come at the cost of call quality, akin to the effects experienced when using a software-defined VPN.
WhatsApp's unique approach to call management involves a specialised protocol that delivers simplified call notifications. This protocol is enforced by the server, which spares the receiving device from the usual complexities involved in call setup and the risks associated with processing potentially harmful data from attackers.
Furthermore, by concealing the IP address, WhatsApp ensures that calls remain end-to-end encrypted. As a result, even when calls are relayed through WhatsApp servers, they are kept private, preventing any possibility of eavesdropping.
These privacy-centric features are currently being released to WhatsApp users across both iOS and Android devices.
