Here are a few simple steps that a motorcyclist can take for an Eco-Friendly ride and give their contribution towards nature.

Motorcycles, while undeniably fun and fuel-efficient compared to cars, still contribute to air pollution through emissions. These emissions can contain harmful pollutants like nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, and carbon monoxide, which can impact air quality and contribute to climate change. By following the eco-friendly tips below, motorcyclists can minimise their environmental impact and contribute to a cleaner, healthier planet.

2

Maintain Proper Tyre Pressure

Underinflated tyres are like running shoes with sticky soles. The increased contact area with the road creates more rolling resistance, forcing your engine to work harder and burn more fuel. This not only reduces your fuel efficiency but can also lead to premature tyre wear. Proper tyre pressure ensures optimal fuel economy, maximises tyre lifespan and improves handling. . We recommend that you stick to the manufacturer's recommended PSI for your specific motorcycle. Make sure that you pay attention to what the attendant has set. The recommended PSI can usually be found on a sticker on the swing arm or the tank of the motorcycle or it will be present in the owner's manual.

3

Don’t Keep it Idling

Every second counts! Whenever you halt for more than 10 seconds, switch off your engine. This simple habit can significantly reduce harmful emissions, especially during commutes with frequent traffic stops. Restarting a modern fuel-injected engine uses minimal fuel compared to the amount wasted by idling for extended periods. In addition to reducing emissions, idling less also helps cut the engine heat, conserves fuel and improves mileage.

4

Stay PUC Perfect

A PUC (Pollution Under Control) certificate verifies your vehicle meets emission standards. Regularly getting your PUC checked, which is mandatory by law in India, ensures your engine runs cleanly and minimises harmful pollutants released into the atmosphere. The cost of obtaining a PUC certificate is usually minimal and you just need to spare 15 mins to get it done.

5

Timely Servicing

Regular servicing is essential for keeping your motorcycle running cleanly and efficiently. Worn spark plugs, clogged air filters, and dirty engine oil can all lead to incomplete combustion. This causes increased emissions, and reduced fuel economy. Following the manufacturer's recommended service schedule ensures these components are inspected, cleaned, or replaced as needed, keeping your motorcycle running smoothly and minimising its environmental impact. During a service, mechanics may also check other emission control systems like the catalytic converter and oxygen sensor to ensure they are functioning properly.

Wash Wisely

Excessive motorcycle washing can consume a surprising amount of water. Wash your motorcycle only when it's truly dirty. Consider using waterless motorcycle wash solutions for a quick clean-up that minimises water usage. However, these solutions may not be suitable for heavily soiled motorcycles. For a more thorough clean, find a self-service car wash with a power washer bay. These typically have high-pressure water jets to remove dirt. These use less water than using a hose. Washing your bike daily might cause swirl marks from the contaminants on the washcloth. If you prefer to wash your motorcycle at home, use a two-bucket wash method with high-quality motorcycle wash soap and microfiber towels to minimise the chance of scratching the paint. Covering your motorcycle with a motorcycle cover when parked can help keep dust and dirt at bay, reducing the need for frequent washes.

By incorporating these practices into your ride routine, you can become a more eco-conscious rider. Remember, small changes collectively create a big impact. Every little bit counts and the combined efforts of many riders can make a significant difference.
