The Xiaomi 14 Ultra could be the best camera phone of the year
Xiaomi, the Chinese smartphone giant, has just unveiled its latest flagship series in India, and the top-end Xiaomi 14 Ultra is a camera lover's dream come true. Priced at Rs. 99,999, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra boasts an unprecedented quad 50-megapixel camera setup, powered by Leica optics and a 3D time-of-flight sensor. This makes it the world's first smartphone to pack such a punch in the camera department.
But the cameras are just the tip of the iceberg. Under the hood, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra is powered by the cutting-edge Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, plus a generous 512GB of storage and a whopping 16GB of RAM.
The display is a 6.73-inch LTPO AMOLED panel, and boasts a resolution of 3200x1400 pixels and peak brightness of 3,000 nits, along with support for Dolby Vision and a 120Hz refresh rate. Xiaomi also says it has used its proprietary Shield Glass protection.
The phone's design uses a mix of premium materials, with an aluminium frame and a leather back. It's also IP68 water and dust resistant, so you don't have to worry about accidental spills or splashes.
Now, let's talk about the cameras in more detail. The primary sensor is a Sony LYT900 series 1-inch 50-megapixel behemoth, with an f/1.6 aperture and optical image stabilization (OIS). The telephoto camera has the same 3.2X 75mm lens found on the standard Xiaomi 14, while an additional periscope camera enables 5X optical zoom with an f/2.5 aperture. The ultra-wide camera has a 12mm focal length and a wide 122-degree field of view. All of these cameras are enhanced by Leica's renowned optics, camera tuning, and colour science. The front camera is no slouch either, with a 32-megapixel resolution.
Video capabilities are equally impressive, with support for 8K video at 24 frames per second and 4K video at 60 frames per second. The phone can also shoot in Dolby Vision HDR 10-bit.
Other notable features include 24-bit audio at 192KHz for hi-res and hi-res wireless audio, USB 3.2 Gen2 support (Type-C), and compatibility with various satellite navigation systems like GPS, GLONASS, BDS, GALILIEO, QZSS, and India's own NaVIC. The Indian variant has a massive 5,000mAh battery and supports 90W wired charging, 80W wireless charging, and 10W reverse wireless charging.
The Xiaomi 14 Ultra runs on the latest Android 14 operating system, skinned with Xiaomi's own HyperOS.
