Xiaomi recalls 1,16,887 SU7 EVs due to a Level 2 driving assistance flaw. A fatal crash in March 2025 triggered the move.
Xiaomi has initiated a recall of 1,16,887 SU7 Standard Edition electric sedans in China due to a software defect in its Level 2 highway pilot driving assistance feature, posing a safety risk.
The recall, announced via China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), targets vehicles manufactured between February 6, 2024, and August 30, 2025, following heightened scrutiny after a fatal crash in March 2025.
The flaw involves inadequate recognition, warning, or response capabilities in extreme road scenarios, increasing collision risks if drivers are not fully attentive.
The March incident, where an SU7 collided with a guardrail at 97 km/h and caught fire, killing three, saw the assistance system disengaged a second before impact, prompting this action.
Xiaomi will address the issue with an update to HyperOS 1.10.0. This update will also apply to the new YU7 SUV, showcasing the advantage of software-driven fixes in modern EVs, similar to smartphone updates.
The recall impacts about one-third of the 3,39,421 SU7 units sold since its March 28, 2024, launch, forming 89% of Xiaomi’s total EV sales.
This setback tests the young automaker’s reputation, especially after rapid market growth, but highlights its commitment to safety through swift corrective measures.
Xiaomi’s recall underscores the challenges of advanced driver-assistance systems in the global EV sector. It may push manufacturers to enhance software reliability.
