Xiaomi has unveiled the first two offerings in its new Skynomad luxury SUV series. The new Xiaomi Skynomad N90 Max is a seven-seat flagship hybrid range-extender, while the Skynomad N70 Max is a five-seat version with AWD. Unlike the company’s pure-electric SU7 sedan and YU7 SUV families, the new series has a distinct design language and will be key to expanding in the fiercely competitive domestic China market.

These models are also likely to lead the company’s first overseas expansion, planned for Europe next year, where hybrids are increasingly popular even as multiple companies pause or reverse plans to go all-electric.

At the time of their formal launch, Xiaomi has announced major specifications of the flagship Skynomad N90 Max.

Pre-orders for both models have already opened, for a CNY 1,000 deposit.

Xiaomi Skynomad N90 Max design and architecture

According to the company, it has spent the past 3.5 years developing a separate architecture, called Kunlun, for these new offerings. The Skynomad N90 has the off-road capabilities of an SUV plus the interior space of a motorhome. Key to this is a 2.9m long fully flat floor with no step up to the third row. Space utilisation has been maximised with the fuel tank, battery, and rear electric drive all fitting below the floor. The rear wheel wells in particular have been optimised to allow for 4.4m2 of interior space

The flexible interior is made possible by a system of six sliding rails made of reinforced aluminium alloy. The longest rail measures 1,938mm. Xiaomi promises extreme robustness, saying seats and other furniture will not slide or shift.

The trunk has a 577 litre capacity but storage space can go up to 1,831 litres with the rear seats pushed forward. The low 690mm tailgate makes loading luggage easy. With the second row all the way back, passengers can get up to 1.55m of seat pitch.

Xiaomi Skynomad N90 Max engine, battery and performance

52kWh Lithium ion phosphate and 76kWh ternary lithium battery pack options, plus a 60 litre fuel tank. Maximum pure electric range for the N90 Max is 464km (CLTC standard) and combined range goes up to 1,705km. It can charge from 20 to 80 percent in 18 minutes, and a 15-minute charge is enough for 285km of range. V2L at 220V and 6.6kW is enough for outdoor camping equipment or other electronics to be powered using the car’s battery.

The company says buyers should be able to use the Skynomad SUVs as their daily drivers without ever relying on fuel, and the combustion engine should only come into play in emergencies or on very long trips.

Peak power is 210kW for the front motor and 100kW for the rear motor. Top speed is 190kmph, and acceleration from zero to 100kmph takes 5.9 seconds. Braking distance at 100kmph is 38.57m. Drag coefficient is rated at 0.255.

After the first service, maintenance should be scheduled every three years or 30,000km.

Xiaomi Skynomad N90 safety

For safety, the Kunlun architecture is designed around an “armoured cage” body made of 90.4 percent high-strength steel and aluminium, aiming for five-star C-NCAP standards. Sixteen key points have been reinforced. The Skynomad N90 has 12 airbags standard, with deployment depending on collision type determined by AI and nine sensors. There are also triple-redundant door handles and dual emergency tailgate handles. AI-powered object detection will warn occupants before opening doors.

There’s front double wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension, as well as R-EPS rack-and-pinion electric power steering with three adjustable levels, five-stage adjustable air springs, and continuously variable damping. The frame between the A and C pillars is designed as an embedded roll cage, and all doors have anti-collision beams. The Skynomad N90 Max can also wade through up to 750mm of water.

The “Dragon Armour” battery system was designed in-house by Xiaomi. Battery cell design is collaborative, but pack design and quality control are all handled by Xiaomi. There are seven layers of protection for the bottom, five for the sides, and three for the top, front and rear.  The batteries undergo 1,230 tests throughout production, from raw material selection to final safety checks.

Xiaomi Skynomad N90 Max interior

The inside has a 2+2+3 seat layout, and Xiaomi promises ample legroom for adults over 6’ tall even in the third row thanks to the mostly flat roof. The rear doors open nearly 90 degrees, and a 180mm wide aisle in the centre makes rear row access easy. There’s also an optional electrically deployed side step. As seen in the company’s earlier teasers, the front seats can rotate and a sliding island can be positioned as a table. The rear seats can be arranged into a double bed, which Xiaomi says is only for when the vehicle is parked. The seats and island are all electrically adjustable, and scenes can be defined for quick layout switching.

Other interior layout options include the “business lounge”, with the front seats rotating to face the middle row, a “play area” with the third row slid back to create an empty open space, “first class mode” with second row legroom extending to 1.55m, and “ultimate storage mode” with space for up to 24 suitcases. All three rows can be combined into a 2.3m long double bed.

Cabin features include 256-colour diffused ambient lighting, soft-touch surfaces everywhere with metal accents on door handles and controls, hidden AC vents, 99.7 percent UV protection glass, a 9 litre refrigerator, and 34 storage compartments. The rear seats get a 21.4-inch screen for entertainment, and there are 14 power outlets in total, including Xiaomi’s threaded accessory mount standard. The front and middle row seats all have 16-point massage, heating, and ventilation functions.

Xiaomi Skynomad N90 Max technology

Xiaomi has developed its own 4-in-1 domain control module, built using a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen3 SoC with 700 TOPs of AI processing. There’s dual-SIM 5G as well as Wi-Fi for connectivity. Drivers get a bright HUD, and there are up to six cabin screens along with a 25-speaker audio system. The company’s XiaoAI onboard voice assistant can adjust vehicle functions including profiles that match seat layout modes with lighting and climate control, as well as take driving commands and natural-language navigation instructions.

There’s also front and rear LiDAR for more precise parking, 4D mmWave radar, and multiple cameras. Xiaomi’s HAD driver assistance feature will receive continuous updates.
