Xiaomi ventures into electric cars with its first electric sedan.
Xiaomi has officially entered the electric vehicle market with the launch of its first car, the Xiaomi SU7 electric sedan. The result of nearly three years of planning and a 10 billion yuan (₹ 12 crore ) investment, the SU7 claims to have cutting-edge features that position it as a strong contender in the EV space.
The Xiaomi SU7 comes in two variants, SU7 and SU7 Max. The base model, SU7, is a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) vehicle with a V6 engine, while the performance-oriented SU7 Max is an all-wheel-drive (AWD) equipped with dual motors for enhanced power and acceleration. Both variants feature impressive battery capabilities, with the SU7 Max sporting a 101 kWh battery with CATL cells, providing an outstanding maximum range of 800 km. The AWD version accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in a mere 2.78 seconds and achieves a top speed of 265 kmph.
The Xiaomi SU7, a four-door electric sedan, boasts 4,997 mm in length, 1,963 mm in width, and a height of up to 1,455 mm. With a wheelbase of 3,000 mm, Xiaomi offers the SU7 in two configurations distinguished by the battery's energy storage capacity. However, the range will expand to include various versions, each differentiated by their power capabilities.
The base model of the Xiaomi SU7 will be equipped with a 73.6 kWh battery pack, while the premium variant will feature a larger 101 kWh battery pack. Xiaomi has pioneered its CTB (Cell-to-Body) technology, seamlessly integrating the battery into the vehicle. This innovation enhances structural rigidity and eliminates the traditional floor setup, resulting in a lower height and a more spacious cabin. According to Xiaomi, the SU7 will achieve an impressive range of up to 800 km on a single charge. Looking ahead, the EV manufacturer plans to introduce a new model, the V8, featuring a substantial 150 kWh battery pack and an extended range of 1,200 km, slated for release in 2025.
Xiaomi claims that the SU7's aerodynamic design has a drag coefficient of only 0.195 Cd – the lowest among production vehicles. The lidar on the windshield, inspired by the smooth design of a pebble in line with the car's sleek profile.
Inside, the SU7 is a 16.1-inch central control screen—two 7.1-inch LCDs in the rear for passengers. There is also a 5-inch HUD for navigation. All this is powered by HyperOS and is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295. The automated driving system (ADAS), Xiaomi Pilot, is driven by a Nvidia Orin-X chip with 508 TOPs computing power.
Xiaomi's debut electric car, the SU (Speed Ultra), hints at a performance-oriented model. Lei Jun, Xiaomi's CEO, envisions the electric vehicle as a dream car comparable to Porsche and Tesla. Despite Jun's assertion that the SU7 isn't targeted for direct competition, its design and performance put it squarely in the league of contenders like the Tesla Model S. Production is underway in Beijing at a facility owned by the BAIC Group, with an annual capacity of two hundred thousand vehicles.
