The new YU7 is Xiaomi's second EV model, and its first in the popular SUV category.
After unveiling its YU7 performance electric sedan last month, Xiaomi has now officially launched it in China and is fully embracing its inevitable competition with the Tesla Model Y. The company promises luxury features, assisted autonomous driving, a roomy cabin and a comfortable ride, all at highly competitive prices.
Like its sibling the Xiaomi SU7, the new YU7 is currently exclusive to China, and the company has not announced any plans to begin sales in India or any other country yet. Domestic demand is likely to saturate Xiaomi’s current manufacturing capacity, with the company reporting wait times stretching to several months even as it rushes to expand its production sites.
Mirroring the SU7 sedan, Xiaomi will offer the YU7 in three variants. The standard YU7 with RWD costs ¥253,500 (approximately ₹30.29 lakh before taxes and duties). There’s also the AWD-equipped YU7 Pro, priced at ¥279,900 (approximately ₹33.45 lakh) and the top-end high-performance AWD YU7 Max, at ¥329,900 (approximately ₹39.42 lakh).
Five new colours were announced at launch time: Pearl White, Ocean Blue, Dusk Purple, Shadow Teal, Dawn Pink, in addition to the Basalt Grey, Emerald Green, Lava Orange and Titanium Silver options shown off at the car’s unveiling in May. New Iris Purple Dual-Tone and Ash Grey interior colour schemes also join the previously announced Pine Grey, Coral Orange, and Twilight Blue. Some colour options will come at an extra cost.
Those in mainland China interested in buying a YU7 can register interest on Xiaomi's app and make a downpayment of ¥5,000, which is refundable if they reconsider within a 7 day window. Limited units in specific configurations are currently in stock and can be delivered within five weeks. These can be ordered and locked in for ¥20,000.
Interestingly, Xiaomi SU7 buyers who have preordered but are still waiting for their deliveries can swap to a YU7.
Xiaomi has also shown off several matching accessories including bags, cups, scale models, wallets, a camping kit, and charging equipment, which can also be ordered through the app.
The YU7 matches the SU7 in terms of design but introduces new, sportier elements such as a ring-shaped taillight unit and a low-slung posture. Xiaomi promises a comfortable and roomy interior cabin with Nappa leather that’s certified toddler-safe, zero-gravity seats with 10-point massaging, up to 135 degrees of recline for the rear row, and massive stowage capacity. The car has 36 interior storage compartments, a 141 litre frunk, and up to 1,758 litre cargo space with the rear seats folded.
The glove compartment can be locked with a password or voice command. Other features include dual 80W wireless chargers, a 4.6 litre heating/cooling refrigerator, visor mirrors with adjustable colour temperature illumination, indirect airflow from the AC vents, a HEPA air purifier, and more. There’s a 25-speaker sound system with Dolby Atmos. All glass is double-laminated, the glass roof offers UV shielding, and Xiaomi says it has implemented over 200 sound dampening features.
Xiaomi has developed its own engine, called the HyperEngine V6s Plus, which boasts of up to 22,000 rpm revs, peak torque of 528 Nm, and peak power of 288 kW. The YU7 Max is capable of a maximum horsepower of 690 PS, a top speed of 253 kmph, and 0–100 kmph acceleration in 3.23 seconds.
The standard YU7 has a 835km claimed CLTC range while the two premium variants are rated at 770km. Xiaomi’s 800V electric platform enables a 10–80% charge in 12 minutes, with a claimed range of up to 620km with a 15-minute charge.
Xiaomi has used Nvidia’s Drive AGX Thor hardware along with a Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC for assisted driving and smart cabin features. The “HyperVision Panoramic Display” uses three mini-LED screens to project information across the entire lower windshield area, which the company says is more effective than a standard HUD. The company’s HyperOS software powers the cabin’s 16.1-inch infotainment display and other screens, and the XiaoAI voice assistant works inside and outside the car, for example to open doors.
Xiaomi also claims top-level safety features, strengthened by the fact that the SU7 has achieved a five star rating from C-NCAP and an A rating C-IASI.
