It is likely that the Yamaha MT-07 or the MT-09 will be among the first models to gain this type of transmission.
After KTM and BMW, it’s now Yamaha who has officially teased its upcoming semi-automatic transmission technology that will be coming to its future range of bikes. But unlike other semi-automatic transmission systems that focus on being practical and convenient for riders, Yamaha’s creation will also be performance-oriented. So much so that Yamaha claims that it will be faster than a quickshifter.
Like most automatic transmissions in bikes, even Yamaha automatic transmission will be operated via switch gears. However, being a semi-automatic unit, riders can toggle between complete automatic and manual transmission modes. For the latter mode, Yamaha has equipped two electronic actuators with ‘+’ and ‘-’ signs. These actuators will perform the duties of left-hand clutch applications and left-foot gear selector, thus keeping the controls focused on the handlebar, which in turn should allow riders to focus on the road and the ride.
In full automatic mode, riders will not be required to give any input at all (as is the conventional case), gear shifts will work in tandem with ride-by-wire throttle and cruise control, and the ride modes will be mapped in the ECU accordingly. Yamaha will also offer two automatic transmission modes namely, ‘D’ and ‘D+’. The former will focus more on comfort with a softer shift feel, while the latter will quicken up shift times and hold gears at higher speeds for that aggressive acceleration.
While Yamaha is yet to confirm which all models will benefit from this new transmission system. However, earlier reports have indicated that the next-generation MT-07 is already being developed with the ‘Y-AMT’ integrated into it. Or we might see it on the MT-09 and subsequently other Yamaha 900 cc triple offerings like the Tracer 900 and the Niken GT.
