The company has just began delivering the Roadster electric motorcycles, which were actually supposed to arrive in March
After announcing and commencing bookings for the e-scooters in November 2024 and promising deliveries for the same from at least May 2025, the Ola S1 Z and Gig e-scooters will take a little more time to come. And this has come directly from Bhavish Aggarwal.
“We are delaying the S1 Z, Gig/Gig+ and some other future products and will sequentially launch these products such that each product receives the right customer mindshare,” mentioned Aggarwal during an investors call. He added, “Our focus right now is the Roadster platform, which is Roadster X, X Plus, and then the Roadster itself, Roadster and Arrowhead. The Gig, Gig Plus, Z, as well as the three-wheeler platforms will be a little later.”
It is good news, though, for the Roadster X and X Plus buyer. These have been waiting to take deliveries of their e-motorcycles for a couple of months, as they were initially slated to arrive from March 2025 onwards. It will be interesting to note if Ola manages to keep the really attractive price points of the S1 Z and Gig e-scooters at the time of delivery as well. When “launched” in November last year, the sticker price was ₹39,999 for the Gig and ₹59,999 for the S1 Z (all prices, ex-showroom Bengaluru).
While the delivery delays aren’t a new thing for Ola, falling behind Ather in operational revenue in a FY quarter certainly is. In Q4 of FY25, Ather outdid its Bengaluru electric counterpart. And for consecutive months, Ola has been slipping down in the electric two-wheeler sales charts, falling short to either TVS or Bajaj on several occasions. And it seems in May, it has lost out to both. Hence, while solidifying and stabilising the S1 platform is key, new products need to hit the ground running in a smooth manner for the company to gain back its healthy market share.
