YouTube viewers with ad blockers installed have begun experiencing videos suddenly jumping to the end.
YouTube has stepped up its ongoing crackdown on ad blockers with a new measure that automatically skips videos to the end for users with ad-blocking software enabled.
According to reports from 9to5Google and Reddit posts, YouTube viewers with ad blockers installed have begun experiencing videos suddenly jumping to the end or getting stuck in endless buffering loops when trying to replay.
For now, this issue appears only to impact users with active ad blockers, and videos play normally once the blocking software is disabled.
The automatic skipping was demonstrated in a video posted to the YouTube subreddit by user SDHD4K. In the clip, their video immediately skips to the end credits when played with an ad blocker active. Attempts to skip portions of the video resulted in it fast-forwarding to the end each time.
Several other users also commented experiencing a lack of audio with their blocked videos, with sound briefly returning when adjusting the volume before muting again.
YouTube has long prohibited using third-party apps and plugins that block ads through its API terms of service. Earlier crackdowns have involved warning messages, slowed loading times, and restricted access.
The new auto-skipped ending seems to be YouTube's strongest measure yet to deter ad blocking. While some see it as intentional, others argue it could be a side-effect of blocker bugs.
The enhanced anti-blocking efforts continue YouTube's moves in the last year to protect its main advertising revenue stream from bypassing user plugins and premium services.
