India served as the global launch pad for YouTube Shorts in 2020.

YouTube Shorts, the short-form video platform, has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing one trillion views in India, according to YouTube CEO Neal Mohan. At the YouTube Brandcast 2024 event, Mohan highlighted the platform's rapid growth and impact on the Indian content creation ecosystem. The success of Shorts in India is particularly noteworthy, as the country served as the global launch pad for the 60-second video format in 2020.

  1. Viewership: YouTube Shorts has amassed trillions of views in India since its launch four years ago.

  2. Creator Growth: Over 11,000 Indian YouTube channels now boast over one million subscribers, marking a 50% increase year-over-year as of December 2023.

  3. Market Dominance: According to Comscore data from March 2024, YouTube leads in both reach and watch time among ad-supported online video platforms in India.

  4. Connected TV Growth: YouTube has become the most-watched streaming service on Connected TVs (CTVs) in India, with viewership quadrupling over the past three years (2020-2023).

  5. AI Integration: YouTube has begun rolling out Dream Screen in India, an AI-powered feature that allows users to generate backgrounds for Short videos.

YouTube's growth in India extends beyond mobile devices. Comscore data indicates that YouTube has maintained its position as the most-watched streaming service on Connected TVs in India for the past 12 months (March 2023 - March 2024).
