The MG Hector now comes with more tech than before. It's safer and promises to offer a better drive too. So does it stay true to its promise.
In 2019, MG Motor India launched the Hector SUV, which received mixed reactions due to its design, interiors, and engine options. Despite this, the SUV was able to carve a niche for itself in a segment already dominated by popular models like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Tata Safari, and Jeep Compass. Recently, in 2023, MG revamped the Hector with an abundance of safety tech, directly challenging the segment leaders. Obviously, we had to see these changes for ourselves, so we took the car out for a quick test drive.
Thoughts On The Looks
The MG Hector's facelift brings a fresh look to the SUV, with a new design on the front section that features a larger grille and split headlamps with LED treatment. The chrome detailing adds to the overall appeal, and the design team deserves credit for their work. While some may find it obnoxious, the trend of SUVs with larger grilles is becoming more common, and when done well, it can add depth and character to the vehicle. Moving to the side, the car retains its character lines and the 18-inch alloy wheels, with a new design while the exterior is offered in multiple dual-tone and monotone options.
The rear of the car is also impressive, with a LED lit connecting strip integrated between the tail lamps and repositioned Hector lettering on the bootlid, giving it a sleek look. The new ADAS badge also makes its way here. Overall, the Hector's new look is a successful refresh, with changes effectively turning heads around. While the design may not be for everyone, MG has managed to balance boldness and elegance, making it a strong contender in the SUV market.
Is The Inside Better?
The updated MG Hector features a revamped interior, highlighted by a larger 14-inch touchscreen display that dominates the cabin. The display is full-HD, smooth, and boasts numerous controls and features that are easy to use and navigate. The addition of the all-new MG Assistant, which can be operated through voice commands, adds to the convenience.
The cabin's light and dark treatment gives it a premium feel, and so does the materials and plastics used. The 6-way adjustable front seats and air purifier provide extra comfort, while the wireless connectivity for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, 360-degree camera, and panoramic sunroof further enhance the convenience and modernity of the car.
Overall, the SUV has a modern feel on the inside. The attention to detail and the use of innovative technology sets the Hector apart from its competition.
What’s Under The Hood
MG has made some changes to the Hector's powertrain lineup with the facelift, discontinuing the mild-hybrid option. The SUV still retains the same turbocharged petrol and diesel engines from the previous model. So, what you get is a 1.5L turbocharged, intercooled, petrol engine that develops 141 bhp @5,000 rpm and 250 Nm @1,600-3,600 rpm coupled to either a 6-speed manual or the CVT unit that we have with us today. Then there is also the 2.0L turbocharged diesel unit that produces 168 bhp @3,750 rpm and 350 Nm @1,750-2,500 rpm. However, this powertrain is paired only to a 6-speed manual gearbox. Understandably, the driving experience hasn't changed, but a few issues from earlier, such as initial hesitance and turbo lag, persists. However, the CVT unit performs quite well, and there are no complaints there.
How’s It To Drive?
The Hector still has some drawbacks in terms of performance. The engine's turbo lag is noticeable, causing delays in building speed. As the Hector is a large SUV with a weight of around 1,655 kg, body roll is significant, which can be felt while driving.
Acceleration also suffers due to the weight and size of the vehicle, requiring more effort to achieve rapid overtakes. Additionally, the wheels impact the low-speed ride comfort, and the Hector now experiences jarring over severe potholes, which was not the case before. This affects the overall driving experience, especially on bumpy roads.
Safer Than Before?
The Hector's facelift has brought with it a host of safety features and Level-2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), making it a safer SUV overall. These safety features include Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, Traffic Jam Assist, Automatic Emergency Braking, and Front Collision Warning. These functions help alleviate the burden of driving and promote safety, especially during long journeys. However, keeping them active always may not be practical, particularly on Indian roads, which can be unpredictable. Therefore, it's advisable to use these features only on familiar roads where their effectiveness can be better understood.
The automated turn indicators, which are activated by steering inputs over 30 degrees, are a thoughtful addition. However, it may become bothersome as it reacts to even the slightest change in direction, causing the indicator to flash frequently. The top-spec trims of the Hector come equipped with disc brakes on all four wheels, front and rear parking sensors, ISOFIX child seat anchorages, and 3-point seat belts for the second row, all of which improve the overall safety of the vehicle.
Although the Hector facelift has an array of safety features, it's important to note that the vehicle does not have a global crash test rating, which could be concerning for potential buyers. It's essential to consider this when deciding on whether to purchase this SUV.
So Should You Buy It?
The 2023 MG Hector facelift is a solid choice for those looking for a feature-packed SUV with a modern look and feel. The larger touchscreen display and MG Assistant add to the convenience and premium experience. The ADAS suite of safety features also adds to the overall package.

Overall, if you prioritise features and aesthetics over driving dynamics and safety ratings, the MG Hector facelift can be a good buy. But for those who prioritise driving dynamics and safety ratings, there are other options in the market worth considering.
