HP Omen Transcend 16 Review: Design And Build Quality

HP-Transcend-16-review-7

The Omen Transcend 16 offers a more compact design than the updated Omen 16, albeit with a bit less graphical prowess. While the reductions in dimensions and heft are minimal, it's not exactly lightweight, but it isn't overly bulky. Among other 16-inch gaming laptops, the Omen Transcend 16 stands out as one of the more thin-and-light options.

At 1.98 cm thick and weighing 2.08 kg, the Transcend 16 is slimmer and lighter than its Omen 16 predecessor. It introduces a magnesium-aluminium frame, which is a significant upgrade from plastic. The diamond emblem is now a sleek Omen logo on the lid with a matte finish. HP's Transcend 16 is being offered in Shadow Black or Ceramic White colourways that blend gaming power with a refined look.

A standout difference between the Omen 16 and the Omen Transcend 16 is their structural designs, notably the switch from a 16:9 to a 16:10 aspect ratio with the Transcend 16. It gives the Transcend a more squared look than its Omen 16 counterpart. However, both models exhibit similarities in their metallic framework and tactile feel.

The Transcend 16 features two Thunderbolt 4 (USB Type-C) ports and a 3.5 mm audio jack on the left. A single 5 Gbps USB Type-A port on the right can charge devices even when the laptop is off. The back houses additional ports, including an Ethernet slot, HDMI 2.1 video output, a 5 Gbps USB-A, and the traditional power connector.

HP Omen Transcend 16 Review: Display And Speakers

HP-Transcend-16-review-3

The HP Omen Transcend 16 features a 16-inch IPS LED display with a 240Hz refresh rate, making it suitable for fast-paced games like Valorant and Forza Horizon 5. The display's brightness was tested to be over 400 nits, covering 99% of the sRGB colour spectrum. This makes the display great for gaming and creative work, especially if the content is primarily in the sRGB colour space.

While HP has improved the hinge in this model, there might still be some wobble if used under a fast-moving ceiling fan. Overall, the display and hinge have significantly improved compared to earlier models.

The integrated speakers deliver satisfactory sound but could have been better. They perform better with higher-pitched sounds, whereas the bass can sometimes come across as lacking depth.

For the Transcend 16 and other gaming laptops in general, investing in a top-notch gaming headset is strongly advised. That's why it's a delight that HP bundles the HyperX Cloud II Core headset with the Transcend 16, and the swift connection and sound clarity genuinely stood out.

HP Omen Transcend 16 Review: Performance And Gaming

The Transcend 16 boasts a superior Intel Core i7-13700 HX processor with NVIDIA RTX 4070 GPU. For gaming hardware, we use synthetic benchmarks like 3DMark and GFXBench 5 and real-world game benchmarks from F1 2021, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, and Rainbow Six Siege at 1080p resolution. We also tested games at 1600p, the laptop's native resolution.

In Shadow of the Tomb Raider, it lagged with 104 fps at FHD. Its higher native screen resolution meant it had to push more pixels, affecting the performance. However, in Grand Theft Auto V, it registered 97 fps at FHD, though it dropped to 60 fps at 1600p. Games like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Far Cry 6 showed mixed results, with the Transcend's performance comparable to other RTX 4070 machines.

Despite these results, it's crucial to note that the Omen Transcend 16's advantage is that it is lighter and slimmer than its competitors. The Transcend maintained consistent performance in a thermal stress test using the "Metro Exodus" benchmark, averaging 74.1 fps.

HP-Transcend-16-review-14

The Transcend 16's performance challenges may stem from its slim design, which can limit cooling and power. Despite the RTX 4070 being tuned to 130W, its thinness might hinder optimal performance. Other models, like the Omen 16 laptop, will have better cooling and GPU tuning due to its larger chassis design, which allows better airflow. However, it's worth noting that the HP Omen Transcend 16 should still handle most modern games adequately, just not as efficiently as its peers.

HP Omen Transcend 16 Review: Keyboard & Trackpad

HP-Transcend-16-review-6

The Omen Transcend 16 features a standard per-key RGB backlit keyboard. The design is roomy, with the top function row taller than the typical half-height keys. Instead of cramming in a number pad, HP smartly utilized that space for full-sized navigation keys, complete with a well-arranged inverted-T arrow key set. The top row also houses shortcut keys for the Omen Command Center and calculator, with the power button seamlessly integrated as a key in the same row.

HP-Transcend-16-review-5

The Omen Transcend's keyboard backlighting is sufficiently bright for daytime use. The WASD keys are translucent for prominence in a low-lit environment. The Omen Command Center offers basic lighting settings, including preset effects and custom colour schemes.

The keyboard has a standard feel with flatter feedback and less key travel than anticipated, but this didn't impact my typing speed or accuracy. The laptop's touchpad is sizeable, matching the 16:10 screen ratio. Although click travel could be shorter, it offers a smooth matte finish for precise navigation.

Verdict

The HP Omen Transcend 16 emerges as a compelling choice for gamers and professionals alike. Its compact design strikes a balance between performance and portability, backed by a powerful Intel Core i7 HX processor. Its 16-inch IPS LED display delivers vibrant visuals, while the speaker system, though adequate, suggests using a quality headset for an enhanced audio experience. The design improvements, especially the hinge, are commendable. However, while it excels in many areas, it does face challenges in optimal gaming performance due to its slim build. The Transcend 16 is a well-rounded laptop, balancing aesthetics, performance, and build quality, making it a worthy consideration in the gaming laptop market.
